My '92 AWD laser is starting to grind second badly due to worn out syncros. I bought the car stock with about 105,000 miles on it and now it has about 106,*** but is now running mid to high 12's on a modded 14b turbo. The car has had a decent amount of weight removed from it so there is not the usual strain on the drivetrain. I'm currently running an ACT 2100 with street disc, and a RRE lightened stock flywheel. The car is a street/strip car but i'm more concerned with the drag strip as it's not my daily.

I haven't put too many miles on the car and when i do it's usually to race it. When i got the car the shifter base and transmission shifter cable bushings were really worn out, causing the trans to go in to the wrong gear during up shifts due to excessive play. Since those bushings have been replaced with solid ones, i haven't had any shifting issues other than grinding.

My overall goals for the car is low 11's with a best of a high 10 at a race weight of about 2600 pounds & 400-450 AWHP on pumpgas and low 500AWHP maybe once in a while on race gas or methanol, with the help of a Holset HX-35 turbo. What are opinions on having my trans rebuilt based on these long term goals? Is there any recommended shops in the MD area for trans rebuilds on a awd dsm? Thanks for any input.

I had to call up dsmgraveyard and get one from them It is a TRE with like 30 k. I know of a guy that does them but its a stock rebuild. And it costs basically 100 bucks less than a tre or shep stage 1. MD sucks everything is big behind v8 or nothing shop wise. The ones that do work on performance cars either A charge way too much and do a half assed job. B do a great job but charge you way way way way too much. I have relied on my experience and ability to find parts on the internet to feed my habit. I have had to all the junk yards are drying up in my area. I honestly dont trust anyone around here to touch my cars. Not even change my oil heck I dont want them to even wash the darn things. Just get one from a reputable vendor like tre, shep etc etc. I feel you pain I just got done installing the one mentioned above in my 93 tsi awd...

I hear ya on not wanting any other joker to work on your car. That's one reason why i decided to become a technician. I didn't want to pay a butt load of money to a mechanic that is going to half as repair my car or charge me and not even fix it. I've heard all the whore stories out there and i want no part of it.
I've been trying to get my hands on a good used trans with in a few hours driving distance, but so far i've had two people selling them in NJ and both deals look like they are falling through. I have a truck to come pick it up and CASH in hand people. I just don't have the money ($950 + shipping 2 ways) to have it sent out to be built and upgraded by Shep, TRE, Dogbox Racing, Jacks Transmissions, etc.
Thanks for the respsonse , this thread was getting lonely.

Yeah i have a friend that deals with him and says he does the best dsm work around but getting him to fit you in to his schedule is tough. I just picked up a used stock trans in PA last week end that was said to have been rebuilt a few years ago so hopefully that will get me to next summer.

Thanks for the reply!
