I popped open my side transmission cover with intention to tighten the 36mm bolt that got loose and caused my 5th gear to pop out. I was all set to fix this, until I noticed the head of the bolt had broken off. I really hope I don't need to buy a transmission, since this one was just recently rebuilt with a double 2nd.

What do you guys think? Repairable or hopeless?

The outside case cover can be put in a vice and tig welded after you clean in VERY well (sand/bead blasting works even better{just the outside where you cracked the housing}) and remove the race and spring from the inside the housing. The syncro looks good too, and you will DEFENITLY need to disassemble and flush the whole transmission of the loose metal shavings. Sorry i can't be more of a help with the shaft, I never fixed that before.

Well my problem is I'm living at an apartment right now, and I can't really work on the car. Could a typical transmission shop fix this using all my gears for a reasonable price? Or at that point would it make more sense for me to send the tranny to Shep or something for a rebuild/repair? I wouldn't want some shitty transmission place try to repair it, only to screw something up and cost me tons of money for no reason. What do u guys think?

Similar thing happend to me, but not as extreme. My 5th gear kept popping out, took the cover off, the nut was off and loose it had broken off w/ half the threads on it. Thankfully it didnt cause anymore damage, and never cracked my housing. My dads friend managed to tighten the rest of the nut back on and then weld it solid on. All while the tranny was still in the car and only the cover off. I guess if I ever need the tranny rebuilt in the future I would have to break that nut off as its not threaded on anymore, but Its been 2+ years of solid abuse and no problems.

I think a decent welder could fix that without needing to pull the tranny, its a bit ghetto but you could weld onto that shaft so its tensioned again, 5th wont pop out, and just get a new tranny end casing.

Hope that helps.
