Ok guys... Im replacing my clutch (2g AWD).... and Im stuck on taking the tranny out..... I was doing everything according to the vfaq, but like i said, im stuck... I managed to take everything off the tranny, but i cant get it to drop... it looks like it is stuck where the tranny and block meet (on the inside).... but between the bellhousing and block is about a 1/2" gap... am i forgetting to undo something? Are my motor mounts stopping it from coming down? all I did on those was take the bolts out of the middle of them so that they would fall... is this going to be good enough? Im really frustrated now.... and i cant even take it anywhere now (obviously!) RRRRr.... Help please!!

Are you sure you got all the bolts?

Or else, try prying it with a thick screwdriver or prybar. Just don't damage anything. ;)

Make sure it's not hung up on the trans input shaft. You have to slide the tranny out away from the block a couple inches before it can drop down.

There is a 12mm head bolt on the back side right above the dr. side axle, alot of people have a tendenccie to skip that one, also there is the 2 bolts that hold the axle half shaft to the block, and last there is a small bolt that holds the starter plate to the trannie right underneith the therm. housing.

Hope this helps if you haven't already got it!!!

Steve. :)

beyond that... persistance, swearing, and maybe a friend to help :)
oh and occationally breaking to swear and drink :)

I had to replace my clutch this last night and I had the same problem as you. It takes a little man power, so pull out the guns. First off, make sure the "5" bolts that holds the trans housing is out. Remove the passenger side tire, that's were you're going to get the best pulling force. Now grab a hold of the housing and pull, there's a center shaft w/ teeths that runs directly through the center of the housing, that's holding the housing onto the block......so pull.....pull....pull.....good luck.

check all the bolts. I just did this...all it takes is 1. I forgot about the 3rd bolt on the rear mount the one you have to get from the top. Make sure you have 3 rear bolts. After that bolt came off it practially fell on me. It doesnt take that much to get it away from the block before it drops. O and the Swearing does help. :thumb:

yes, and if you can... throw in the rear motor mount bushings from energy or prothane. my motor sits a bit higher than i remembered because of the mount bushings.

It makes it easier if you remove the bracket that mounts to the top of the trans... it gives you more room to slid that bastard off of the inputshaft. Make sure your intermediate shaft is out of the way and not tearing up your drver's side axle seal on the trans.

actually rather than removing the whole mount, you can just remove the bolts that hold the mount to the tranny. I had to fight with it for a while taking the whole mount out. Fight.....And when putting it back together watch out for that little ground wire up by the starter.Ahhh so many setbacks...

Just the portion that houses the rubber bushing.. I actually left mine on (loosley) when I re-installed the tranny. That way it had a little play to get it around the frame rail.
Haha.. did you pinch that wire between that trans case and the block?
I was careful to make sure all was clear..
eheh.. for some reason there is a little gap wtf..? haha..

Yeah I pinched it haha. The only reason was because it was being a real PITA to get back in and the car was on a lift almost all the way up. I had no idea it happened until i put it all back together.

That sucks... think about this.. LOL
I pulled the trans and tranfer case and had a leak somewhere in the bell housing.. I told the Eagle dealer that I needed an input, output and transfer case (inner seal) and whadaya know they gave me the wrong seals.. so the car got put back together with the old oily clutch and still leaking (its my daily driver) so I have to do it all over again.. Im lovin life!
