It's too long for a quest. The quest also has a hybrid torque tube type setup, if I recall correctly.

I'm just throwing an idea out there. What does the 3000GT and Stealth's driveshafts look like?

Like I already said, its not a stock mitsu piece. Knowing that, it is going to be impossible to determine where it came from.

So your saying just because the washer is circle that its not OEM? It looks like an OEM piece.

Give me a junk driveshaft with good ends and I can have an oem looking piece made locally. There are lots of machine shops that make driveshafts and you could probably find one local to you also. Chances are, the balance weights will be washers just like on your shaft. Mitsu does not use washers to balance. The use square or rectangle(depending on weight) balance tabs that are stamp welded to the driveshaft.

Do you think I should take it to a machine shop and have the balance checked. When I bought this car it was tore apart. The kid was an idiot who owned it before me, but I dont think he did this mod. The original owner bought this car as his daily drive, but he was a Rally Racer. I wonder if he did this to the car. It drives fine and has no vibrations so my mechanic told me not to worry about it.

Since it was balanced and you feel no vibrations, I wouldnt worry about it.

Now, there is something you do not see every day . I too, would love to find out the origin on this shaft!

I know this much, it is definitely not from a Starion, I have one in my garage (form my RWD project) and it is much bigger in diameter than a DSM shaft.

If you look the rear shaft is larger than the front stock DSM shaft. My mechanic swears its a mitsu and he is very knowlegable when it comes to DSM's. I think it may be custom though.

Just wanted to bring this back to life and see if anyone could look at the pics and notice if they know what was done under my car.

Well, I had a 1991 Talon Tsi FWD 5-spd with 272,000miles on it -- they were made.

Very interesting thread, I am looking forward to hearing more about this car's history as it unfolds...if anything unfolds at all.

Personally, it looks like someone had a custom fabbed shaft made using the stock joints with a "new" tube many, many years ago.

Sincerely,

I did this to my 3000gt Vr4 driveshaft and later to my Talon. It is an old trick, we did it to have less whight in the drivetrain and only one carrier bearing. I have had this done for over 5 yrears in both of my car with no problems. It can be done by any driveshaft shop.

Thanks jazzy, thats pretty cool. So your just saying someone just cut and rewelded a driveshaft. But what shaft did you use originally to make the 2 piece?

My original owner of the car was a rally racer and he bought it from another rally racer for his kid. Needless to say this car was beat to hell when I got it.
