Does the car rattle at idle?

Check the actual starter ring on the flywheel. Make sure that everything is tight. I have a spec(fidanza look alike) and the starter ring does this same thing.

ok, as of now i tried multiple starters, and they all do the same thing. So that would only leave me with the flywheel right? well i sent to fidanza today and ill have to wait to hear what they say. Could this be anything else?

chances are you got a FWD flywheel. That would make it grind in a AWD...

Yeah, I think the FWD is a little smaller than an AWD flywheel, or at least the ring is.

power=dsm, you may want to rethink that, im no genuis but i know a starter pinion makes contact to the (flywheel) ring gear, soo does a flywheel have anything to do with this? ill let you reanswer it. Fidanza should have the flywheel up there today and hopefully an answer on what the problem is.

also fwd and awd flywheel's do have different teeth counts, i believe 106, and 110

it's not a difference with the starter. It's the bellhousing on the tranny that is different from a FWD and AWD. And that is why their is a FWD and AWD flywheel. I believe the starters are interchangeable.

Don't be saying it's not to flywheel when you don't know what your talking about. Chances are the flywheel was mispackaged. It happens all the time with parts. I know I order parts of customers car go to change them and low and behold it's the wrong damn part. I'm sure you will figure it out. Also if it's not the flywheel it could be the bindex on your starter. it might be bad... Easy to check though. Pull it out and put some juice to it. If the gear fully engages then your bindex is good. I've seen a few starters where the bindex would ouly go half way and grind a ring gear to pieces. Sucks cause that requires changing the flywheel/flexplat most times. Good for the mechanic but bad for the customers.

Yes thank you for your information, i was simply stating that the starter is the same. The only difference on flywheel is as you mentioned above.

fidanza called today, said flywheel is correct, but he is replacing the ring gear anyhow, was only off by .003 from factory, i checked starter, starter is coming out completely, Dave, tech guy from fidanza, said the starter gear is not engage, umm how should i say this deep enough into the teeth of the flywheel, as in the starter is doing its job correctly, but there is to much space inbetween the teeth. the contact pattern on the starters i was trying all showed the flywheel hitting perfectly in the center....

addition: would it hurt to remove the spacer plate between the engine and tranny or Trim the section the starter bolt holes are, if this is possible, i could use some of the slop in the starter mount holes in the tranny to bring the starter in closer?

How do I check to see if it is grinding on the flywheel without dropping tranny?? The cover for the flywheel was not put back on, there could be something in there..But as said I do not want to drop tranny to find out. Is there an easier way???

If you are having noise when starting, it's probably the starter plate that is bent and grinding on the starter. I had that last year and got a fresh starter plate. Tranny has to come out for anything in the bell housing to be checked. Not fun but if you have a 1g, it's not THAT bad.

Update on talon: Replaced starter with new one. Looked at the flywheel ring gear, is fine. Put all back together and something is still grinding when she's cranked...What could it be I wonder?? It's probly something simple that I am over looking...

Nothing is grinding away at the starter.

Hey guys this was a thread from 06 that I searched and had the same problem. Thought I would post and bump it so I didn't have to make new thread...

Flywheel sitting perfectly flush on the crank. You have a 93 with a 6bolt, meaning it was swapped. Did the engine come from an automatic?

Yeah it's a late 92 not 93, but has 6 bolt swap. I really couldn't tell you if it came from an auto or manual, since I just bought Talon monday..

you are backwards. the AWD is slightly smaller (I am assuming they made it this way to accomadate the transfer case output shaft.)

Possible but I did this with a 4G63NT and it ran fine, it just backed the transmission off the block.

you are talking about the flex plate centering ring correct?
