a couple weeks ago a friend of mine was driving my car on the freeway, then all of a sudden the rpm shot up from around 2.5k-5k real fast. after that car popped out of gear and was hard to get into any other gear. got the car almost home and the car died. i can't start it up anymore or even get it to crank. when i try to turn it on, i hear this loud strange coming from the motor somewhere(kinda sounds like a garbage disposal).

i then found out theres a huge crack on top of the tranny, can be seen from the engine bay. i know the tranny is gone(less clutch pressure feel) but the question is, why wont my car start? could the tranny cause it not to start?

My tranny cracked recently, which lead to my tranny swap, which is still not complete, however thats another post..LOL..anyway, From what it sounds like, you may have more cracks than you think. This may be a stretch, but if your tranny is cracked around the starter area, your starter may have shift far enough from the flywheel, to not be able to turn it, when you step on the clutch... that to me would explain the grabage disposal noise....when mine cracked, I got about almost 1/4 inch of movement away from the block! Have you tried, turning the key while in gear ( disable clutch switch first..obviously :) ). If car jumps forward, good, try turning the key, while sinking the clutch, in nothing...then that may be your problem...among taking it down and welding..or swapping..

I had a feeling it might be the starter but wasnt sure. You said disable the clutch switch before turning the key? I did however try to start it while in gear and still hear that noise and car doesnt go anywhere. I've been looking for a tranny for weeks now, and it either cost too much, they wont ship, or grinds a little bit . dam 1990 awd's! I'll just sell the sucker, and buy another one. Thanks for the help though :thumb:
