hey guys,

anyone have any tips/suggestions on how to get the tranny bolted back up? I took it down easily for a clutch swap, but it's been a bi*** trying to get it back on.

I just did my tranny swap that went sour cause the tranny I was gonna put in didn't match. I have a 1g but I'm pretty sure we have the same bolts. There's 2 bolts (14mm) on top and on the bottom that hold the tranny to the engine (3 from tranny to engine, 1 engine to tranny right under the starter), get those in first. After they're in place (I hope u already aligned your clutch and tightened everything) put the tranny mount in place. Put the starter back in (2 long bolts forgot which size, 14 I think as well comin from the tranny side). Put the frame thing back in place, the one that also has the front engine mount on it and a hook for the exhaust. Put the slave cylinder back in place (2 short 12's). Put the gear cables w/ brackets back where they should be (lube everything up nicely and don't forget to tighten them).
The rest is just putting back the MAFT/battery and the rest of the non-tranny related stuff in.

Notes:
-Don't forget to plug 1 connector along with the speedo cable back into the tranny.
-There are 2 ground wires that you need not to forget about while doing the first part of this post. One big one goes with the left (looking from passenger side) bolt from the starter, and the second one goes into a bracket that leads the metal line for the clutch slave cylinder (the bracket mounts to the tranny)
-If you removed the slave completely you need to bleed it, there's a guide on here in the Tech Guide section on it, if you can't find it tell me.

Good luck, if you have pics I can help out some more if this isn't clear enough.

i was thinking about renting a tranny adapter for the jack...do you think they rent those out at autzone?

and thanks for the info. Dred, i appreciate it, but i was referring to the actual physical part of maneuvering the tranny back into place. Do you remember any "tricks" you may have used to put it back in?

Oh I usually jack up the engine by the oil pan just a tad above level. Then with my trans jack pump up the tranny and push it back towards the firewall. At this point possibly raise the engine some more if the won't slide back far enough. Then slide the trans onto the engine and that's it.

Well, the way I put the tranny back, was I got a buddy, we picked up the tranny, put it back where it should it be, while holding it up there put in 2 bolts, and voila. The tranny will hold on 2 bolts no probs, just make sure you press the tranny into the engine (using hands) while tightening the bolts, so that everything is straight. Also I'm not sure, is a GST awd or fwd, cause if it's awd i'm not sure the tranny is as light as mine (I can lift and carry mine with ease).

finally got it on...

i didn't have time (or the money) to find a tranny jack, so my friend and i tried the "bench press" method:

-used a small jack to level up the engine
-jacked the tranny up half way
-had my friend lift it up a little from above the car so i could slide the jack away and get under it
- pushed it up while he wiggled it forward to meet the engine

im sure the tranny jack would have been much easier, but this also worked...well in my case atleast.

thanks again for your suggestions
