My FWD tranny recenlty grenaded itself leaving chucks of metal all over inside itself. I found a used tranny that has been rebuilt by Mitsu which has only 5 miles on. Not sure how true this is, but thats what the person selling said and also stated he has paperwork to prove it. He is asking $600.

Spoke with Jon at TRE and explained the situation and he said the worst case, it would cost $1600 + shipping for a rebuild/upgrade tranny.

The thing is I dont know what to do. My car is a daily driver which I ever hardly beat on the tranny. the most abuse the tranny would ever see is 7750-8000RPM shifting but I ususally like to go WOT runs. I have a built 6 bolt with a 50trim, 1000cc injectors, dsmlink and pretty much al the supporting mods. My goal is to reach somewhere around 450HP and may happen to take the car out for a few quarter mile runs to see what she can do and what I can do as a driver. This car isnt going to be 99% race driven but more like 80% streeting driven and 20% race driven.

How much abuse can the stock FWD tranny hold up? And based on my driving charateristics, do you think the STOCK tranny would be fine? I use the car everyday to get from point A to point B. Money is kinda tight right now that is why Im contemplating. I know that a TRE tranny would be the best route, but money is an issue. I mean I can go that route and eat crackers and water for the next few months but...it wouldnt be pleasureful.

So anyone thoughts, ideas, opinions or suggestions are greatly appreciated as I need to make a decision soon since this guy with the Stock FWD tranny is waiting on me.

im in the same boat as you, but i ahve an AWD tranny and i too can get a tranny installed for 600 and i was the original owner of the tranny so i know it only has 32000 miles on it, now this is what i did, and i believe you should do too. first, if $$$ isnt an issue send it to tre, if it is, then go get that cheap one, if you have a bit to play with do what i did and find a local shop and see how much they want to rip you tranny out and repair it if you brought the parts. buy parts from TRE and have that shop fix your tranny, i got out of it all spending 1800, i know its a lot but for what i got im pleased, i got the galant vr4 1st gear and input shaft, i got the super duper 2nd gear, super duper hevy 3rd/4th gear, all the modifed synchros, a full seal and bearing overhaul on the tranny, and a few other things, for TRE to have done what i wanted it wouldve cost me wayway way way more like 2200 or more, i only need next time i upgrade my clutch to shell out the dough for the 5th gear and 4 spider center diff

One thing to consider is the amount of time you have to get your car back up and running. I sent my tranny to TRE and it took about 3 weeks to get it back, so expect the car to be down for a month if you go that route. Dunno how long Shep takes...

I believe Shep takes less time and possible the same or less money. I'd go ahead and spend the money right the first time rather than blow up a 600$ tranmission and wanna put the built on in 2months later. Its just gonna be easier to get the bullet proof for sure brand new transmission than take the questionable route :thumb:

good luck

i will say this to you, do whatever your pocket book will allow, but if it is big enough for a shep or tre tranny do it, you wont regret it, later down the line youll be in the same boat again, do it right the first time,,,,,,, also, shep is a bit cheaper, and may or may not take less time, if you speak with jon ripple at TRE and explain to him you want a tranny done asap, you might pay a bit more or not but he can at least put your tranny on red alert to get it finished more quickly,,,,, also TRE has been doing this for over 15 yrs so they know their stuff, every tranny and part is inspected meticulously, id personally would go with TRE, all you need to do is speak to both shep and ripple and see which one is more knowledgeable and thorough, shep is very smart but to me the conversations speaking to jon ripple sold me his parts and not sheps, TRE is exceptional and ill stick by them
