got a big prob on a low budget

ok...heres what...I got a 90 Talon TSI AWD.I was on my way to work and went to shift into 3rd gear and it grinded a bit so I eased off and tried again.it went in but when I hit the gas it seemed as if I was in neutral.Got it to 4th,...and made it to my exit.stopped at light and went to go and its like its stuck in gear now.no neutral,1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th or rev.linkage is ok though.do I need a new tranny or is this an easy fix?need help soon.Only car and have a 5 mnth old son.Any one?
 
It sounds like the bearings went out in your transmission on the counter balance shaft, or the "big nut" on the end of the shaft by 5th gear worked its way loose. You can start by draining your tranny fluid to see if it gernaded inside. See if any bearing or syncro pieces are evident in the fluid. If so, find another tranny. If it comes out clean, you can try and remove the end cap of the transmission by removing the passenger fron tire, and accessing it from there. Once the cover is removed, you will have acces to a "big nut" that should be "punch-locked" into place. If it has come loose you can try and tighten that to spec, seal up the cover and fill tranny with fluid. Then pray that it works. :thumb: Hopfully this solves your problem. Other than that, this problem might not be in the budget :thumbdown

Thanks....Gonna try it,hope it works.Sounds like you know whats up,thats cool,Im new to the dsm culture so....Have just purchased a haynes manual so it might make it a bit easier.cool man,Ill be in touch....thanks

I had the same thing happen on my 90 TSi AWD last year. Problem was that the shift rail (?) broke. Needed to have my tranny rebuilt. Hope yours isn't as bad.

I agree, i got stronger shift rails on my shep. rebuild, to avoid this problem.
