Hello guy's,

I have finally found the replacement for my fwd Talon, a 1990 5spd awd Eclipse. Here is the plan. I bought this car with no motor no tranny and no transfer case. However, the rear and driveshaft are still there (3 bolt) so the car rolls. I will be installing the motor from my Talon into this car, but obviously will need a tranny and transfer case. What years of tranny and transfer case can I use and how do I tell what spline count I have. Obviously I count the splines, but what splines? Is it true these transfer cases use a viscous coupling? What about the rear, is there any kind of posi in it?
I am sure these are a bunch of dumb questions to most, but I have been stuck too long in the fwd game too long. Thanks in advance for all of your help. It is greatly appreciated.

i'm pretty sure the transfer case itself doesn't use viscuous coupling, but i believe there is a lsd between front and rear wheels. i believe some cars came with a LSD rear end or ABS, but never both. might wanna wait for somebody to back me up on these opinions though

Well, the easiest way is just count them. The spline count is determined by counted the "male" splines on the shaft. So, if you have the xfer case, count the female ridges. It should be 21 or 22. 23 didn't come along till much later. The center differential and viscous coupler are in the transmission.

The rear may/may not have come with one. The easiest way is to look at the drivers door jamb and look for an orange sticker stating same. In the absence of that, jack up rear and try to spin them independantly. You may have to spin it around a few times--it is a viscous type, not a clutch type. It would help to secure one wheel and try to to move the other.

Ok, so if I understand this right the spline count thing refers to the shafts mating the transfer case to the tranny. Now for another question:is there a specific transfer case I should look for? Are the JDM tranny/transfer case worth the money. This is probably something I won't look into for a while, I just want to get the car running so I can enjoy the awd fun that everyone else is having. Thanks guy's for the help
