Labor is never free. Time=Money. (lt will take a lot of time)

The amount you will spend on parts alone and modifiying will still be more than the price difference between a TSI and TSI AWD.

Foget RWD.

To do AWD conversion you'll need:

AWD tranny----$700
AWD flywheel---$75
AWD Clutch---$250
X-fer Case------$250
Driveshaft and carrier bearings----$150
Rear Differential---$350
Rear axles----$150
AWD Rear hubs ---$150
AWD Rear suspension --- $200
AWD Exhuast----$75

*all prices are junkyard/dsmtrader estimates

When I listed the required parts in post #6 I was thinking about a 1G FWD to AWD conversion, although I did not specify.

What parts out of that list would not be needed to do a 2G FWD to AWD conversion?

Why do you think only a 2G FWD can be converted?

I'm pretty sure there would be a TON of welding and custom fab #@%#@%#@%#@% that has to be done. At least this is what RRE said.

2g's are all bolt on. A few minor welds, but nothing horrible. A 1g would be a custom fab job 100%.

I forget the specifics, but I know if you call RRE or look around for their posts on the original conversion, you will find the details.

Humm... I have an AWD and a FWD, spent ALOT of time underneath both. I don't think it would be as difficult as you say, although some fabrication may need to be done to the crossmembers and exhaust. Next time I'm under the Laser I'll pay more attention to the differences.

I have a lot of respect for RRE, as I am a regular customer of theirs, but I don't think it would be that difficult. Of course, it would obviously be MUCH easier to just sell the FWD and buy an AWD.

1G AWD has a completely different trunk pan and gas tank than FWD to accommodate the driveshaft and the rear differential. One would basically have to swap the entire rear of the car to be able to convert it to AWD. In the long run, the conversion would cost much more than a price of average 1G AWD car.
