I am having problems with my car somehow. I will list track times and mods and then we will see if anyone can help me figure out what is wrong with my car.

Car: 90 Laser FWD turbo

(no mods, 11 psi)

60': 2.276
330': 6.465
1/8: 9.867
MPH: 73.18
1000': 12.740
1/4: 15.156
MPH: 93.25

(free mods, intake, no exhaust, mbc at 20 psi on ported 14b, ported exhaust manifold, 118 octane, re-wired 190 walbro, ported 2g o2 housing, palmlogger)

60': 2.619
330': 6.678
1/8: 9.810
MPH: 80.42
1000': 12.410
1/4: 14.629
MPH: 100.62

(same mods as before, 2.5" complete turbo back exhaust, act 2100, s-afc, shift kit, shifter bushings, rre lightened stock flywheel, SS clutch line, 110 octane)

60': 2.488
330': 6.783
1/8: 10.174
MPH: 73.64
1000': 13.007
1/4: 15.428
MPH: 93.34

Not only are the E.T. down, the 1/4 MPH is down drastically. I am having issues dealing with putting more mods into my car and it going slower than it did stock. The last day at the track I made several passes about 30 minutes apart and the best I could run was the 15.428, my E.T.'s were from there all the way to 17.xx. The only thing I can think is happening is heat soaking the stock smic, running the 14b past it's efficiency, it was about 15 degrees farenheit warmer and that I could not go past 60% WOT in first gear without blazing the tires. I need some ideas on what is going.

well for one, you HAVE to get that 60' down. If you can get that down closer to 2.0 you will do WONDERS for your 1/4 times.

Secondly, your boost is too high. even with a rewired 190, you need to keep it to 17. You will have soooo much knock it is not even funny. You will have timing at 9deg or so after about 4 grand. You will make more power at 16 psi then you do at 20. really. And yea, a 14b is not any good above 18 psi. Just not in its efficiency range, and blowing hot air. Also you can do alot of work around the intercooler to free up some air flow, to make it cooler.

If you log timing and knock along with throttle position and RPM you will see. you have an safc, get bigger inj. Then tune for under 5 knock. 0-3 is better. Also get an upper intercooler pipe.

then its all about the driving. you should be high 13's with those mods. I ran 14.0 first nite out, with only an upper ic pipe, 3" turbo back(With cat) 2g manifold, and 15 psi boost. No fuel system mods, no porting at all. Oh I had a K&N too.

Knock was around 12-13 counts on each of the runs and timing was not being pulled badly but I will keep the boost down if I decide to keep the 14b. I am planning on either a big 16g and 550's or AGP RS49/20g and 660's with walbro 255 and fuel pressure regulator. Anybody else got some good input? Thanks for the help Bohrn.

Jake

your welcome :)

Just drop your boost to 17 psi. It will do wonders. If you can get your knock down to 8 or so, you will see big power gains.

Another thing I can think of, the lightweight flywheel may be hurting your shifting speeds. Sometimes the flywheel makes the revs drop so fast it can slow you down.

Try getting a fuel pressure regulator before you do any other fuel mods. I say skip the big 16g and go for a big turbo and injectors. I also say skip the walbro pump and go for the supra pump.

Right now with the Walbro 190 I do not think that fuel pressure is being skewed nearly bad enough to spend the money on a afpr. When I install the 255 within the next few days, I will however hook up a BM fuel pressure gauge set and see what the fuel pressure is like to know whether or not money should be used for an afpr.

With 110 octane the 14b should be good until about 20 psi, but those knock counts show something isn't right. Hold off on future mods until you get this sorted out. You shouldn't be outflowing a 190 lph pump yet, even a 16g shouldn't outflow the 190 pump. Could it be a boost leak, leaking BOV, or maybe you're just killing the tires with wheel spin?

Yep, I'm baking the tires all the way through first and second if I even try to go 100% WOT. First gear is basically useless so I'm looking into some suspension work, Greddy Profec-B with remote switch and some stickier rubber.

Jake

I wouldn't worry about suspension too much, but u need to get the knocks down and timing up. Judging by ur knocks, ur getting about 18*-19* timing, thats good on pump gas but pretty crappy for running race gas. Also check ur base timing, might want to retard it a bit and get some better timing on top. You need to work on those 60ft, if i can cut low 2.1 60fts on blown stock & struts and heavy ass kumho 712's u can do the same.

I will adjust timing this weekend when I "work" on my car. Keep the ideas coming, often times it is the little things we overlook that add tenths onto E.T. and overall begin to add up.

Jake

If you're spinning in second gear with those mods, you should look into getting better tires. Remove some weight from the back, like the spare, jack, tools. That will help the tires hook up. and keep practicing, tire spin is not good for times.

Everything except the carpet is removed from the back of the car. I am looking into some stickier tires as soon as I get my new set-up on and tuned on the dyno. The install list is pretty big for this weekend. I may just got for some slicks or M/T DOT tires and just use them for racing. Jake

Yeah, I'm hoping with some good tuning to put down 400 whp and run a good low 12, maybe high 11 with slicks. I will let you know on Monday/Tuesday how everything feels and how bad first gear gets :thumb: .
