I participated in the AMS sponsored "Midwest Mayhem" last Saturday at US 41 in Indiana and took third place in the Mitsu Turbo class. I had a blast racing and meeting some new DSMers.

But my biggest thrill was on the track. Not only did I get the pleasure of actually meeting Darryl Hudson http://awdnot2.com/ and finding him to be a friendly, down to earth guy, I also got the thrill of lining up with him and his killer Eclipse on the last pass during test & tune runs. He had run a 9.7 earlier in the day.

I knew I was going to get creamed big time but I was more nervous about screwing up and doing something embarrassing than actually running against him because I knew everyone would be watching.

We rolled in nice and easy, and lit the last staging bulb. I put it up on the 5500 rpm stutterbox and launched on the last amber. His reaction time - .557, mine - .582, pretty close. His sixty foot - 1.525, mine 1.768, I'm hangin' on his rear fender. After that, it was like he strapped on a rocket!! WOW! I was so amazed at how quickly a 9 second car runs away from a 12 second car I hardly noticed my intake pipe blew off! He ran a 9.8 at 148 mph to my limping, puffing black smoke, 14.6 run. But the very unique perspective was well worth the trouble. And I didn't embarrass myself!

Hey, I was there also and took 1st in the mitsu turbo class. It is interesting how the likes of Daryl Hudson and John Shepherd seem to more down to earth than some people with their head up their ass and runnin 13's. Great meet and looking forward til next year, gonna be running 11's on this 16g by then.

Glad you all enjoyed it. I had the white first gen on the gold wheels that was running 10.60's with traction issues.

Sheppard and hudson are great guys and really really down to earth most DSM pro racers are just the same. its all a big family no matter what shop or team you represent.

we will deffinetly be putting this on next year as well.

He was down here a few weeks ago running demo passes for GDSM at a midnight madness, and he is easily one of the most likeable racecar drivers out there. He was dogging it all night long (no sense in breaking things for a non-competition event) and still running 10 flats. The real joy was just being able to see under the hood and talking about his setup. He has a PT-67 running around 38psi of boost (which had even some big block chevy fans grinning. If that doesn't make you happy I don't know what will.

This was a fun little event and I'm glad AMS is going to do it again next year. I'll definitely be there again.

I had my first full-pass shakedown runs there. I learned a few things I need to change. I compromised some things over the winter and was way, way down on power. I went 10.5's at 130-132mph. The good news is, it handled properly and went down the track without incident. I will be pulling the power back up to 150-some mph worth for next time out. I have WAY more traction now than ever before.

Anyway, good job AMS!
