I participated in the AMS sponsored "Midwest Mayhem" last Saturday at US 41 in Indiana and took third place in the Mitsu Turbo class. I had a blast racing and meeting some new DSMers.
But my biggest thrill was on the track. Not only did I get the pleasure of actually meeting Darryl Hudson http://awdnot2.com/ and finding him to be a friendly, down to earth guy, I also got the thrill of lining up with him and his killer Eclipse on the last pass during test & tune runs. He had run a 9.7 earlier in the day.
I knew I was going to get creamed big time but I was more nervous about screwing up and doing something embarrassing than actually running against him because I knew everyone would be watching.
We rolled in nice and easy, and lit the last staging bulb. I put it up on the 5500 rpm stutterbox and launched on the last amber. His reaction time - .557, mine - .582, pretty close. His sixty foot - 1.525, mine 1.768, I'm hangin' on his rear fender. After that, it was like he strapped on a rocket!! WOW! I was so amazed at how quickly a 9 second car runs away from a 12 second car I hardly noticed my intake pipe blew off! He ran a 9.8 at 148 mph to my limping, puffing black smoke, 14.6 run. But the very unique perspective was well worth the trouble. And I didn't embarrass myself!
