:dsm::dsm: ok i am new to the dms i have never had one before now and wondering do they have a stock intercooler and how much does an upgrade help? :dsm::dsm:

Thanks,
Matt McD

IC or intercoolers are basically heat exchangers. Much like your radiator, which is liquid-air cooler, the stock DSM side mount intercooler or SMIC, works on the same principle, to cool off the incoming charged air. We do have stock intercoolers. Boosting causes more heat, and its the colder, more dense air, not volume of air, that is the target for most horsepower and resistance to knock. So they add an intercooler, or heat exchanger, to combat and aleviate the stress of knock. Front mounts, or FMIC, can help dramatically. The "ram air" being pushed over the IC helps dramatically over the stock SMIC, eventhough they have some duct work to "control" the air flow, it only helps so much. My Z31 doesn't even have an intercooler for the turbo, but its only @ 8lbs, so what do you expect? We could keep on and on of the benefits of front mounts against side mounts. Just read and read some more.

You're going to get more horsepower if you upgrade piping and to a fmic, over the stock smic, but you will notice a big difference once you start doing other mods to your car. I noticed a big difference when I went from my side mount to my front mount because I had already upgraded to a bigger turbo, and the fmic helped cool things that much more, creating more power. Plus if you have the supporting fuel mods etc., with a fmic you can turn up the boost.

They have sidemount intercoolers (smic) from the factory.

The other part of your question is bench racing which is not allowed here.
