Is anyone running the "stroker" crank from the 4G64 in a 7-bolt 4G63 with HKS 272 cams and 1mm oversized valves? I am looking at going this direction but I am wondering if there will be problems with the piston/valve clearance. I am looking at going .020 over Wiesco pistons on Eagle rods w/a knife-edged 4G64 crank on the bottom of a 1G 7-bolt. the head will be worked with 272s pushing 1mm oversized nitrate coated valves on both sides. is there anyone that has this (or very similar) setup? I am open to any thoughts or insites on this setup, as it sits I have just stripped the block bare. I haven't even taken it to the machine shop yet, so I have time to think about exactally what I am going to do.

Thanks in advance -

I haven't tried the setup you're speaking of, but I just wanted to point out one thing. Nitriding is NOT a coating, it is a surface treatment. Bassically the metal is dipped in a cyanide salt bath at about 800 degrees and this hardens the surface of the metal. Just thought you might like to know.
An easy way to check valve to piston clearance is to spray WD40 on the piston and head, put a chunk of play doh or clay on the pistons valve reliefs, bolt the head on, and turn the engine over. You'll have a nice imprint to cut in half and measure clearance.

that makes sense... but is there any way to know BEFORE I spend the money on a set-up that has the potential to not work?

I have 6-bolt with the 4G64 crank, 1mm over valves, and the stage 3 crower cams, and JE pistons. Once the cams were degreed in I had zero problems with piston to valve clearence.

Of course your set up will work but, you may have to adjust your piston to valve clearence to get the proper clearence. Things like deck height, how much your cylinder head has been cut, valve seat depth, valve margin height will also effect what your piston to valve clearence will be when your motor is assembled. You will just have to check and adjust if necessary. You can alter piston to valve clearence by changing cam timing. But if you need more room it is better to flycut the piston valve reliefs for additional clearence.

why dont you just go out and get a 2.4 bottom end and but a set of forged pistons in it. i would be easier. also yu need to worry more on the rod length/ wrist pin height if you are going custom but the other best bet would a complete kit that someone already did the hard part.

actually I was thinking just that... I really don't want to clearance the block, and all that, so I am just going to knife edge the stock crank and build this engine as a 2.0. Hovever, I am now looking for a 4G64 short block to put a '63 head onto.

If you are looking for a set of wiseco .020 over 4g63 pistons, I have a brand new unused set with pins and rings for $375 plus shipping. Do a post search in the "for sale" stuff. I went a different route on my 1g and don't need them any more. They were a custom order from aem, as you will see in the post.
