Hey guys im really not to sure what this noise is thats coming from my bottem end (7 bolt) Im new to the whole crankwalk stuff. At first i thought it might have been a balance shaft bearing but then last night i took off all the belts to access the balance shaft belt area and noticed theres no balance shaft belt already so i couldnt be that.. It doesnt really sound like a rod knock its more of kinda grinding noise a little... Any help would be great thanks.

Anyway you could get a video of what the sound is?

Also is the grinding consistent when at idle and when you rev it or drive it or does it change?

It's a little tough to tell from the video but is it the clicking noise you're referring to? The clicking noise sounds like it's steady and consistent.

I agree, it definitely doesn't sound like rod knock to me. Rod knock is a really loud almost "clacking/clanking" noise.

Like I said, it sounds like the noise is pretty consistent and is going with the engine but you might want to drain the oil and see if you find anything. See if you find any shavings or if there's something rattling around. Depending on what you find (or don't find) you might want to consider taking off the oil pan and taking a better look.

Thanks guys for the quick reply. Ill try get a better video of the noise. But I might go ahead and drain the oil first and see what it looks like. If I find small metel shavings ill be pulling the oil pan. To see what I find.

I'll cross my fingers for no metal shavings!

I know you said there was no BS belt but do you still have the balance shaft or is it eliminated?

Ok guys i got some good news. I found out my noise issue was my trigger plate was slightly rubbing on the crank sensor. Heres a better video of the noise i was talking about. Mark this thread as resolved for other people in the future reference.

Thanks Donnie. How do I check the end play on the cranksshaft? Do I just crab ahold of the crank pully and push it in and out and see if there's any play??

Preferably with a dial indicator and magnetic base. But, if you can detect movement by pulling and pushing the crank in and out with your hand its pretty obvious that its walking.

not in every case, a friend of mine had his crank cut and after assembly we measured .007 endplay that you could move by hand. i wanted to get another crank but he insisted on running it how it was. well three years later, 30,000mi, and daily 32psi 550whp pulls the car is still running with 20psi of oil pressure at idle and 80psi at redline. the endplay measured .008 from 5k mi till the end of last year. i didnt check the fillet radius when we put it together but i bet there wasnt much of one. but if your hearing that noise your past .025 i belive

Not exactly! The trigger plate may have been damaged during assembly. Perhaps the crank bolt came loose at one point causing the plate damage. This would be a good thing to hope for but no way to tell for sure until you check the endplay.

While you're in there you could check to see if it still has a rear balance shaft installed. You would probably know though because the engine would vibrate like crazy if it did. Either someone just cut the belt or they removed the front case and installed a stub shaft while leaving the front b/s in place. Did they even secure it in place blocking the oiling holes?
