I searched, but I still have unanswered questions. I'm putting my rebuilt 7-bolt head with FP2 cams on my built 6-bolt block.

I know I need to bore out the holes for the headstuds. What I can't figure out is what timing components I can re-use, and what I need to purchase.

Will I be able to use the pulleys, tensioner, and belt on the new block? They were all almost new on my 7 bolt.

And since I am using the 2g cam gears, I can re-use the same timing belt right?

And timing covers? Will the lower 2 be 6-bolt and the upper 7?

And the crank pulley is the same for all years right?

On another note, how do you guys feel about buying used ARP headstuds? Too much of a risk to save $50?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm trying to figure out what to sell and what to keep.

You'll be able to use the tensioner and either timing cover sets but you won't able to mix and match the lower halfs. I would recommend that you use a 7-bolt cover set because once the lower half six bolt cover is on the block, you'll have to take the motor mount mounting bracket studs out to get the cover off. You'll have to trim around the water pump though.

If the cam gears are a different size, use the cam gears from the other head. Compare them to be sure. As long as the came gears are the same, you can use the same belt, tensioner, pulleys etc...

I think you'll be fine with what you got. I'd go ahead and do the headstuds now while you have the head off, save yourself some labor in the future.

You might run in to a problem with the crank sensor. There are people that have had machine work to accomodate the sensor. The timing belt will cross over no problem.

I thought the tensioners were different on the 6 and 7's? As far and the cam gears they are all the same size. Instead of using your crank sens. why dont you just use the 6 bolt CAS? Or do you not have it? Also the tensioner bracket will have to be off a 6 bolt.

Thanks for the replies guys

The head is the one from my 7 bolt that the 6 bolt is replacing. So it is the same head and cam gears as before, only the block is changing.

I'll be getting a 6 bolt CAS per the magnus instructions. And I guess a tensioner bracket as well

Make sure you drill the stud holes out enough because one of them is the oil feed for the head.

Thanks, I'll mention that to the machine shop

Ok, putting all the stuff on the new block and I have one question. The tensioner bracket is the tensioner itself right? Not the bracket that the front pulley bolts onto?

I don't see why I can't fab a bracket to make the 7 bolt tensioner fit into the 6 bolt's holes, anyone done this?

Also, my block is missing a plug for the front balance shaft. Is mitsu part # MD092785 the right one?

Yessums, MD092785 is the right part number for the freeze plug like cap, are the balance shafts eliminated?

I'm not sure about the tensioner though, I always thought they were interchangeable.

Yeah the balance shafts are eliminated, just no plug.

The bolt holes for my 7bolt tensioner don't line up, the bracket is different.

I'm buying a 6bolt one, they list 90-92 and 92-94, does it matter which I get?

6 bolt & 7 bolt,,timming covers are diffrent.

A 6 bolt only has 2 peices, 1 big one for the engine and the other for the cam gears..

Im pretty sure you can't use a 7 bolt timing cover on a 6 bolt,,let alone a 2g on a 1g.motor.

Ok, 6 bolt timing covers then, thanks

What about the metal plate that goes behind the drivers side mount? The one with the bolt holes for the timing cover, is that the same?

I'll try them, thanks.

Anyone know how to tell if my 6-bolt is a 90-92 or 92-94? Does it really matter when ordering parts? I see many OEM parts have different ones listed for the early and late 6-bolts

be careful about how your wording "6bolt" somebody correct me if Im wrong but the 6bolts were produced from 90-92.5 so anything 93 and up is a 7bolt.

I believe the piece your referring to is called simply a front cover. Its aluminum and sits behind the timing belt etc?

Wow, this thread has me all confused.

Mark, do you know what block you have? As Kolby stated, 6 bolts are from 90-92.5 and 7 bolts are from 92.5-99. There are different parts for the 92.5-94 and 95-99 7 bolt blocks. Please make sure you know which one you have before purchasing all your parts. I have a 1g 7 bolt block and it can be kind of confusing.

Oh, and I believe the part you're questioning about is a timing tin. One of the tins goes behind the drivers side motor mount that bolts to the block.

The 1g 7 bolt motor had me confused. It is a 6 bolt so it must be 90-92. Thanks for clearing that up.

I don't find anything in the OEM catalogs under timing tin, but I do find front cover. I'm guessing I need the upper, inner ones for right and left sides, they are cheap. I hope I don't need the lower ones, one is $100.
