Well, i just ran for smokes and only steooed in it one time, when i pulled in the driveway i had what sounded like a completely collapsed lifter. After trying to trace the sound with a mechanics stethescope i found nothing. The noise seems to be coming from the timing belt side, but back towards teh IM or underneath it. :(

Not too happy, but i will further diagnose it in the light tomorrow. I hope to hell that at most i have to re-bearing it. I'm not financially ready to get my other block done the way i want it. pLus i don't feel like swapping it out after just re-gasketing the entire motor a few months ago...

Errrrr...completely frustrated at this point. We'll see what happens. I'm hoping that i cna get away with a bearing swap at most, but we will see.

HOpefully good news: When i first started her up she was still kinda clackin a bit. But, after a few minutes of warming up the sound was gone!!!

Last night after further inspection i had started to think it was a wrist pin knocking (something i've enver heard a DSM do) because it seemed to be coming from underneath the head at the # 1 piston. BUt because it sounded like it came from underneath the intake as well i washaving trouble really finding the source of the clacking.

oh well, I'm going to drive her easy for a bit today, put some thicker oil in and hope for the best. When i called my machinist for some info in another thread, he said he'd finish my spare block off for only 300 bucks for a bore, clearancing, check and install my eagle rods (one needs a new small end bushing) and assembly. (we're friends , that's why he's so cheap for me) I only need to get a set of pistons. So I need to start looking at piston options again. It's been 5 years or more since i bought the slugs in my current motor.

The bad part is i'm not sure what's a good piston anymore for a decent price. JE's use to piston slap all the way to hell and back. Wiseco's don't seem to be built to take the heat of a turbo motor by the way they expand (or the last set of wideco's i put in a car didn't) and i really don't think i want to pay a ton of loot for a set of venoila's (sp?)

Jesus, i can't believe piston prices for our cars... i only paid a tad over 300 for the pistons in my block now, but i need a bore on my spare block and need some 0.020 over units.

The most reasonable deal i can find now is 449.00 + shipping. When we bought the pistons for the turbo neon 420a motor they were only a bit over 260 bucks shipped (JE's) in 8.8:1 CR.

Err.. jsut had to vent that, i've got everythign except pistons to let me drop the spare block off and he said he'd do it so cheap that i don't want to wait for him to get busy in the sprint car season and then have eiher the price go up or it take longer ( I was told 5 days and my motor would be done, and that's for the 300 bucks :D ) Now i just need slugs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I beat my car EVERY TIME i go out, so i want a good piston in the new block.

Okay, now i need some help on this one. Once the motor warmed up the noise was back. Using the stethescope i eliminated the possibility of it being in the bottom end. It sounds like it's coming from behind the cam gears, but when you listed around it seems to come from under the intake at the front of the motor as well. It's not a deep sound, but a weird clacking that is not completely consistant and goes away with higher RPM and oil pressure.

Any advice, any similar experiences?????????? I'm not going to driv it hard until i figure this out or get my second block done.

My suggestion would be the pull the pan and rod caps, it really isn't that difficult or time consuming once you get the car up in the air and the exhaust off. I had a bearing go bad and it was pretty much exactly what you've described. Noise which sounded like it was in the head but really hard to pinpoint @ cylinder 1. It was the #1 rod bearing, gouged a bit from oil contamination I believe, but the crank was fine. I bought all new bearings and plastigauged everything and it has been fine for around 20,000 hard miles now.

[edit]I see your other thread now that you figured out it was something else, glad it wasn't anything serious![/edit]

did you just replace the rod bearings and everything was alright. i asking cause my number 1 cylinder rod bearing went out. im going to just replace the rod bearing. what is this plasticgauging? do i have to do that too. im hoping i didnt eggshell my crankshaft. you think i will be alright just replacing the one rod bearing? the other bearings were fine.
