I'm driving to pick up a 92 7 bolt shortblock tomorrow. The 7 bolt is already built and machined with Eagle Rods, Wiseco Pistons and new OEM crank. He said it has some surface rust from sitting in his garage. This is my first motor build, is there anything that I should look for to make sure nothings wrong with it? Like should I bring a 1/2 driver to make sure the crank rotates with out too much effort. Also I'm hoping the surface rust he was refering to is on the outside of the block, and not inside (guessing this would be bad). TIA

Update: Picked up Block

Well I drove to PA today and picked up the 92' 7 bolt block. It has eagle rods and wiseco pistons w/new oem crank like he said. I also bought a head from him, has crower springs (I think he said), and also bought crower cam gears with hks 264/272 cams. All for $1100 - I think I made out pretty well.

The block and cams have some minor surface rust on them, was wondering what would be the best way to clean off? He said something about using a SOS pad lightly to clean off the rust with no soap. I also read about using an emery cloth. Any suggestions on what would be best is appreciated. I'm not sure how well the pictures will show the rust, but it looks very minor to me, I'm able to rub off some of the rust with just my finger lightly going over it.

Is it just me , or does it look like there is some pitting in the cylinders in the third pic?

Good observation, I just ran out to the garage to check. It's not pitted/pitting, it had some small pieces of cardboard in it. There's also some packing peanuts in the head that I need to clean out. Basically some packing materials from the seller (was sitting in a box with peanuts). I haven't had a chance to clean it out yet - just got it home posted some pictures then had to run out to my familys house. The cylinders seem fine no scratches or small holes, just the minor surface rust.

Any tips on how to clean the rust? Seller recommended SOS pad for cylinder walls and very fine grit for hg surface. Does this sound right?

I really want to get this cleaned up and start putting the motor together, but don't want to take any chances messing something up.

A Brillow pad will be ok to get the rust off. You should spray a light coat of WD-40 on any exposed machined surfaces to prevent rust until you put it together. When you do go to put it together clean off all the WD-40 and then wipe just the cylinder walls with a very light coat of transmission fluid.

Thank you, exactly what I was looking for

Now that you say that, that is exactly what it looks like. I'm glad that's all it was. :thumb:

I'm working on the motor today. Used a brillo pad to get the rust off the block and the cams. Then sprayed it over with some wd-40 (Thanks again awdtalontsi1992). I was looking over the parts and found out, the Wiseco pistons are 0.040 over not standard, and the cams are Web Cams 272/256 not HKS, with crower cam gears. I'll post some pictures later on. Right now I'm trying to get the trans off my old motor. Unbolted all the bolts and it's seperated just can't get it to pull out. Guess I'm gonna have to bother my bf to come out here and help. :p

Well I'll keep the thread updated in case anyones following along.

I cleaned off the block and cams yesterday. Also cleaned out my old oil pan and turbo lines (metal shavings from last motor)

Took this picture with flash, it looks shinier than it really is.

That cleaned up pretty good. Just don't forget to reinstall the guide pins for the cylinder head!
