lifer tick or spun a rod?

Not sure if this was the right section or not, but figured it does have to do with engine internals.


Ok, did all the lifters today along with the timing belt tensionar and crank acc. pulley. Started it up and still loud clicking noices coming from the top of the block where the timing belt is. Its at the right side if you are looking at the front of the engine. If you apply the gas the noice gets louder and more violent. Oil pressure looks good, oil level is good. no check engine lights.

So am i looking at a spun rod?

Like in my other post, it was tuned, thats when the loud tapping started in the higher rpms first. Next day on the way home I had to pull over under normal driving cause the egt guage showed the temps going up. Also felt sluggish of the line under normal driving. After I pulled over the noice was constant and stayed and got louder. Its been sitting since. Car starts right up and ildes fine, just has the loud ticking, and when you apply the gas it gets worse.


Oil level was the first thing I checked, and the pressure seems ok on the stock guage. Its just funny how it started to do it all of sutton. If it was the valves, would I have some discolored smoke or wouldn't it have issues starting or other symptoms? I'm trying to rule everything else out too. I guess the next step will be draining the oil to see if ther is any metal in there.

The vidio above is right at start up, it idles fine but you will hear the loud ticking. Its so loud you can barely hear me saying a few words in the vidio. Also notice as I rev the car up a little close to the end, watch the cams and listen too. It also doesnt sound to good right after it was shut down.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I"m not sure bro. I'm having the same problem right now as you though actually. First thing to do is check the timing. Make sure all 4 marks line up where they are supposed to with the dowel pins up. After that, pull the valve cover off and do a visual inspection. See if anything has fallen out of place or whatnot. After that, I would drain the oil looking for metal shards with a magnet. Then pull the pan if there is. If none of that is it, pull the head.

This is what I plan to start on tomorrow as well.
 
valve cover was off today cause I replaced the lifters. Everything is in tact. Timing is good too. Heck it did that while I was driving. I did check the timing marks today though.
 
You checked all that after the noise began?
YES, so I replaced the lifters thinking it was them, thought maybe one of the them collapsed. But I replaced them today so its not them since I went with the 3MM 3rg gen upgrades.
 
That sounds more like a rod knock to me. lifters dont normally get that loud. Have you checked your oil for metal shavings?

I havent checked the oil yet. Just weird how it all of a sutton started. It started doing that at higher rpms when it was getting tuned. then went away till the next day when I was driving at 65mph on the hight way egt started to climb so I pulled over and I could hear it. I drove it for a bit longer like 1-2 miles and the noice got louder I finally shut it off and towed it home.
 
Screwdriver technique is where you put one end of the screwdriver (I usually use a long rachet extension) to a spot on the motor, valve cover, etc and put the other end to your ear with your hand cupping it.

It usually works pretty well for me to find the source of the noise.
 
rear balance shaft bearing? hmmmm ok what a good way to check that and why do you think it is the issue? Guess I should also ask where to look for that.

It's about 7 inches behind your Oil Pump buried in the Middle of the Block - Quit running this Engine immediately or you'll destroy it & get to work on doing the BSE that you should have ALREADY DONE anyway when you did the T/Belt job - & EXCELLENT job on the Video of presenting your problem BTW.

For the video, are you being serious or was it that bad?

Is there a way to tell between the rear balance shaft or a spun rod then? I'd hate to get something that doesnt need my attention.

Wonder why no one else has told me to look at the rear balance shaft bearing except you two in this post. Most everyone has pointed me to a spun rod.
 
Another possibility would be a broken rocker.

I have seen this a few times on DSM's, where the needle bearings within the rocker roller fail. This causes the roller (the part that actually contacts the cam) to drop (so to speak) slightly in reference to the cam lobe. essentially once the needle bearings fail it drops and starts riding on the pin portion of the rocker. This can be difficult to stop if one does not look very closely. In extreme cases the two ribs of the rocker (either side of the roller) will start contacting the cam lobe. This in effect is like a lathe with a very dull bit, and will eventually machine the lobe narrower.

Ballance shaft bearing is another possibility, but you said the oil pressure was good. The rear one is also a common problem.

Because few people stop to consider that when you wrap up a DSM's tach to seven grand, the balance shafts are spinning fourteen-thousand in plain bearings, and the rear is supposed to be feeding them oil through the middle of that monstrously-spinning tube of iron.

Is there a way I can tell without ripping everthying out if its the rear balance shaft?

I was serious, the Video did an excellent job of conveying your problem - Pull the Rocker cover & pray but you'll know it's the BSE FOR SURE when Oil Pressure drops like a ROCK any minute now & the entire Motor grenades - SO - Unfortunately you have to bite the bullet - You screwed up not doing the BSE a LONG time ago - If you give a damn about the Motor park it & tear the Front case back off & do the BSE, there's no other answer your gonna get because there is NO other responsible answer to gve you.

BSE was never done cause I was told as long as the pulley and belt were done it be fine. I never took the front case off. I should be getting a bottom end and head this weekend and will start to put together my first block. Then when that is done I'll drop it in. The bottom end I'm getting already has the BSE done along with never rod bearings I believe.

Rocker cover? please explain where that is located, dont think I have heard of that. Yes, I am new to building or tearing engines apart. I know there are rockers that sit on the lifters, but haven't head of a rocker cover. Thanks!
