Fort Walton Beach,
Is there any oil ports that should be cleaned or replaced when doing a rebuild? I heard someone say that before and was just curious to what they were talking about. I thought it was just on the crank the oil ports should be cleaned. Am I missing some somewhere? Otherwise what all should be cleaned out to make sure oil flows good?

You want to clean out all the oil galleries with bottle brushes. You can get a kit at jegs or summit, someone posted a link not long ago. http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=MRG-1211&N=115&autoview=sku

You'll see the main oil gallery running the length of the block from the oil pump area. You also need to take out the pipe plugs and clean out the cross-drilled passages (through the balance shaft bearings). You'll see what needs to be cleaned when you're looking at the block. You're just trying to make sure to flush out all the shavings left over from machining and/or old built up crud. Anything you leave in there will go straight through your brand new bearings on first startup.

Have fun.

What if I am removing the balance shafts?

Junk in the balance shaft passages might wash into the main gallery. All oil galleries are connected. You want everything to be clean. No point half-assing it.

It's no big deal, you'll see the plugs on the block. If you destroy them while removing them you should be able to find them at napa or at a hardware store. They're phillips heads.

Does anyone have a picture of these oil plugs? Only plugs I know of are the freeze plugs. And what is the plug with a phillips head?

They're on the outside of the block, in the balance shaft area. If you have the block out of the car they are very easy to see.

So I should take those out and clean them out? :thumb: Thanks for the help guys. And you said Napa should have them?

I've seen them at my local napa. You might be able to salvage them. But really you could use any short bolt of the right size that doesn't protrude into the balance shaft bearing.
