Borrowing from an idea I used with a 1600 Lotus DOHC, I made a jig frame which is secured to the drivers side strut mount and has a bar with threaded studs which sits just outboard to the top cam cover which would enable me to "slid" the 2 cam gears off the cams onto the 2 studs with the TB loosened a bit via the tensioner tool. The TB would be zipped locked to the gears to prevent slipping. I have already tried this and found moving one cam at a time is the better method. With the gears/TB on the jig I have maintained pretty good tension so the TB remains tight on the lower sprockets. In addition, I can backthread the 2 studs so the gears move a bit more towards the fender.

My question is, will the head now come off without having to remove any of the TB cover(mid) bolts or is there something that is going to hang up in that area ? I need to disconnect the CAS obviously but am doing that at the connector.

Anyone foresee problems here as far as the head coming off clean?

Thanks,

Craig

On my 90 I just shoved a piece of card board between the gears.
Undid the top bolts of the timing cover.
Released the belt tension with the tensioner tool and pulled the gears forward.

Did it twice in two weeks and didnt have any issue with the belt slipping.
The little plates are attached only to the head, so aslong as you unblot the cover from them, the head will come right off.

Dont forget the intake manifold bracket.

Interesting ....when you say, pulled the gears forward, you mean laterally off to the side, right ? ...what "little plates" are you referring to ? If I understood correctly, only the topmost TB cover(right on top of the TB) held on by 3 bolts..2 on top and one tucked away towards the rear going horizontally need to come off as far as the parts on the TB side of the head, right ? Or are you referring to the lower TB plastic covers' (you have a different setup on a 1G, 2 midsection TB covers, I believe?) bolts needing to be removed, the one;s that go into the sheet metal plates on the side of the head below the topmost cover ?
