So I'm out doing a bunch of searching all around for Mivec to see if anybody's done anything with it yet... and I found a mitsubishi motors page that explains the theory and has a couple of their engines listed.

So, it looks to me like they produced (producing?) a 4G69 motor with mivec, and what I'm really wanting to know is if anyone knows if this head (being a 4G6x series motor) would fit on the 4G63/4 blocks. (my intentions are to build a hybrid 2.4 turbo mivec engine) More importantly, if anybody has some diagrams of the heads for 4g9x and 4g6x heads, so I can see where the water and oil passages come through on either... If I can get some diagrams, I'll figure out how to make it work.

see if you could find a picture of a head gasket - that would give you a basic idea of where oil and coolant passages are. won't give you dimensions or measurements but you could see if things might line up.

Yea, after posting, I was actually thinking about running down to kragen or auto zone in the morning and seeing if they have any head gaskets in stock... cause if that head will fit, I'll go order a ralliart head from mitsu asap :D

The 4G69 that comes in the Ralli Art Lancer has the timing belt on the passenger side, 180* opposite of the 4G63s and 64s found in DSMs. :thumbdown
If the coolant passages, etc... lined up with the Evo VIII 4G63 then you could possible make a 2.4L DOHC turbo or a 2.0L MIVEC.
You can probably find somebody with a spare 4G93 head gasket or at least a pic of one at http://www.mirageforums.net/
Might be able to find some more info on the 4G69 and 4G94 at http://www.evolutionm.net/ They have separate sections for the lower level Lancers.

4g64 and 4g69 were both sohc. i know for a fact the 63 head fits on a mightymax 4g64 block and the sonata block.

What is MIVEC?
Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing and lift Electronic Control its basically Mitsubishi's version of VTEC.

The MIVEC motors that were offered overseas in the past were all DOHC, but I don't think they would be a very viable option. The 4G92 1.6L that came in the Mirage Cyborg and the 6A12 2.0L V6 that came in some FTOs.

Yes, and from what I've read the 4g92 head will not fit on a 4g63 or 64 block, being reverse oriented or some of the jackets not lining up properly, don't remember which, feeling a bit scatterbrained tonight... probably not impossible to mate, but definately not a viable option... would be better off designing a CNC'd head that would hold the MIVEC components and fit the 4g63 at that point... but I'm not all up in my autocad abilities and whatnot so I don't really foresee that happening :thumbdown

Though I would be curious to know if the 9 series motors would be adaptable to the eclipse awd transmission, because then it wouldn't be all that hard to just build a 4g93 up to handle turbocharging, instead of trying to mate a sohc mivec head to a 4g63/64 block.

if the timing belt is on the passenger side, wouldn't that mean the whole engine is turned around? I've got a couple friends that work at misc auto dismantlers and parts stores looking for MIVEC heads/head gaskets/diagrams and any info for me, so here's hoping I get the required info.

All thsi work to gain a few ft/lbs from 2-4k?

What can I say, it's the hot rodder in me... just want to have something different, and if it makes more power, all the better... Also, the design of the 4g69 head allows for more efficient burn of fuel under 3500rpms than even the direct injection heads, which means better fuel economy too (if I'm going to be paying damn near $3 a gallon for 92 octane, then I want to get decent milage off of it)

Yes. I thought you were referring to using the MIVEC head on a 4G63 or 4G64 from a DSM. If you plan to use the whole motor then that won't be the problem.
You'll have to make custom mounts and find a transmission that will work properly. The engine would end up sitting on the passenger side of the vehicle, so you would have to use a tranny that mounts on the driver's side. You MIGHT be able to get away with using a modified Evo VIII drivetrain or tranny. Unless you're talking about going FWD, then you won't run into as many problems.
A good project to look at would be the Extreme Motorsports Mirage (their black '99, not the new one that looks nothing like a Mirage). The 5G ('97-'02) Mirages have the motor on the passenger side with trans on driver's side. They swapped a DSM 4G63 into the car, but it required a fair amount of welding and custom work.
Its definitely an original idea. :dsm:

Okay, I've looked into this a bit, done more research, and found this

http://www.rpw.com.au/Performance U...Lancer - Mirage 4G92Mivec/lancer104engine.htm

Which tells me that what I want to do can be done.... now what I was hoping to find out next... where can I find a 4g92 head and 4g93 block to mate up? I have a machine shop that'll take care of the rest for me... I just need the shortblock and a MIVEC head... Anybody know of a place (local to sac, ca would be great, but wherever) that I can find these parts? What kind of cars did these motors come in?

For the cost of a head from overseas plus shipping, you'd be better off buying a complete MIVEC motor from a JDM importer.

There are numerous importers in your neck of the woods. or Search EBAY.

Sounds every bit as worthwhile as the Cyclone manifold.

Cripes, how much longer until the world is freed of the archaic bumpstick. Hydraulic, pneumatic, anything else. But get rid of those stupid camshafts and the half-assed gimmicks and tricks they keep trying to keep the concept bolstered up with.

I was browsing over some magazines while waiting for a girl to get done shopping last week, was looking through SCC.. they had some article on the EVO...talking about how the EVO X is supposed to be using a 4g69 variation or something..

obviously nothing is credible at this point, just some food for thought

I know this is kinda off topic but, what tranny can I use to bolt up to a 4g94? My stock one is going out in my 04 lancer thinking about upgrading since ill be needing one soon anyway

Holy necro thread. As far as "upgrades", nothing DSM will work, and nobody experimented with these. You could use a 4G69 Ralliart transmission's guts with a 4G94 bell housing to get a shorter final drive (assuming you have the F5M42 transmission). The only upgrade past that is an expensive LSD. Basically just get another one of what you had before.

You can adapt a DSM head to use mivec cam gears.... but it's outside of most peoples' realm of ability/knowledge. I've seen it on a car before and I'm sure some people here know who's car it was on. I'm not going to name drop but mivec is possible on a DSM just not the way it's being talked about in this thread.

Also, the cyclone variable runner idea definitely doesn't suck. The manifold flows only a few CFM less than a stock 1g manifold but has the added benefit of more midrange power. Think of it as a variable geometry turbo ... but for your intake manifold O_O. The only thing that sucks about that manifold is that the plenum is too small to do anything "really serious" on and people do dumb shit like try to use a wastegate actuator to move the butterflies..... yes this "does work" but it's far from the ideal situation the mitsubishi engineers that are "far smarter" came up with.
