My 14b has 194k on it and takes awhile to reach full boost (5000+ rpms). It still seems to reach near full boost. Is this a result of the miles on the turbo or a problem somewhere else in the system?

If it is worn out, then what is more cost effective? New? Rebuilt? And if a rebuild is the course of action then where do I send it? Is Texas Rebuild a good price/value?

Thanks in advance.

Geez, 194K is a lot of miles for any car and especially a turbo. IMO the thing has had it's heyday and you should probably consider a 16G for overall performance and cost.

It's prolly baked the oil a few times, gummed it up and now has to work twice as hard.

Other posability is that ya could have a boost leak... but chances are the turbo is begging you to upgrade.

Thanks for the advice.

One more question: how much will a 16g be limited by the stock intercooler, fuel pump/injectors, etc...

i have a ported 14b with 34mm flapper and less that 40k on it (can't remember how many miles exactly, i bought it for a replacement for my talon), i have the exhaust housing off the turbo right now, still putting some finishing touches on it, its not a perfect 14b, but it has no shaft play and no wobble (if i recall)..
does this community think i can sell this turbo for $250 (assembled obviously)?

I have a small 16G with basically no other mods to support it really, other than a rewired fuel pump, and an MBC.

Even so, it's a really great turbo, and feels much more stronger than the 14b, and the car is happy. It feels much better than the dying 14b did.

Just make sure you datalog it, to find out if you're pushing the rest of your car too hard (fuel delivery, knock etc)

Suggestions:

Personally I don't buy turbos off the internet, especially used 14bs. There are a lot of mfers who sell complete #@%#@%#@%#@%, get a new warranteed turbo (best bet). UNLESS you know the person who you are buying from and the car it came off of, or from a reputable DSM source. Use caution is my argument.

You won't be able to go too far with stock fuel system, upgrade and you can. From my own experience I got 13.55@99 with stock fuel system and IC, 13.00 with a 255 Walbro and 550's (other things need to be stated).

Raceguy,

I bet you that you have a problem with your turbo exhaust housing. It is ether cracked so much that your WG can not fully close, or you WG actuator is not closing it all the way. Good used housings can be found as little as $25-$50.

Ether way, I would not get a new turbo turbo unless yours shot and I am not sure that it is.

Well I cant see how they would help. I understand that less is better. but a hole would create a little restriction in flow, but nothing to really notice.

Your car sound exactly like mine used too. My 14b didnt hit full boost until 5900 rpm, and I also had a small hole in the DP. When I upgraded, I pulled the turbo apart and found many exhaust housing cracks, as well as a bigger diameter hole where the wastegate sealed. So the wastgate never fully closed, which is basically why it sucked ass... On stock fuel system (could do rewire for like 15bucks). you could run the 16g at like 12-13 psi with no other mods. You will feel a world of difference after you upgrade. My Big16g's boost threshod is at like 2300rpm in 3rd and hits full boost (17psi) at about 2950...:D

How much boost can a 14b take until the fuel pump is maxed? (assuming it's been rewired)
