I have a 90 tsi awd with 140,000mi on it and would like to rebuild it this winter. What have you guys run into, anything i should look out for. I plan on gitting hold of a whole kit, any brand recomendations? I have a 92 i plan on driving when i do this, so i dont have a time issue at all. I would like to get a new turbo (16g) and all the supporting mods. Maybee a front mount!!! i would like to be pushing 300-350hp. I would still like this to be a street car, so nothing to radical. What would you guys recomend.

there has to be someone out there who has rebuilt??? ANYONE

planning on doing it myself as soon as i find a backup car....... theres plenty out there on the subject......
i'm goin with a 6bolt(i own a 91) with 2g pistons and 550's and evo 16g.
do you have any experience rebuilding engines? this will be my second one......and my dad is a mechanic(man that helps) but our engine is still just an engine.....same as any other one to rebuild(except the slut of a timing belt) do this part correctly!!!! it will pay off to take your time.
good luck and hope you get the results your lookin for..

Go with 2 g pistons and 1g rods . Redo the head a 20g maybe a better turbo for the power out put you are fooking for and a fmic is always better.

this will be my first rebuild, but i have mechanical abilities :D , Ive just never done it. what is the reason for going with 2g pistons, lower compression?

Mechanical abilities have nothing to do with a correct rebuild. They help when overhaul, disassembly and assembly, prime and startup but you really need to have somebody with qualification and equipment to perform the machining . 2nd gen pistons use to be an alternative for 1G's for higher compression ratio but things have changed , since there are high quality forged pistons readily available in various compression ratios. If you do the math how much it will cost you to machine the small end of the rod to accept 2nd Gen pistons added to the price of the pistons themselves you are at the price of a set of forged ones and guess which ones are best.
