I have noticed with my t25 I can build boost while in 5th goin around 45 mph up a hill. Since bigger turbos spool slower will I have less power for up hill driving with out having to downshift?

I have noticed the dave brode uip has helped a bit with up hill driving. :thumb:

You're developing boost because you're loading up the engine. For me, 45 and a hill are too much for 5th, but when I'm doing a "hill" it's usually the Sierra Nevada mountains. I'm just more comfortable banging down a gear and letting the engine run more freely, often without boost at that speed. But you're not going to blow it up.
In 5th at 45, you're at about..... 2250 rpm? If it's a real hill, that's kind of a lot. If it's one of those bulges they call "hills" in Ohio, it won't matter.

A larger turbo will develop boost higher on the rev band, but I don't know if you'll "have" to downshift. The characteristics of the hill are too variable.

Their not huge hills but decent ones, short though. I tested at around 45 miles per hour in 5th I can build atleast 5 psi at 2000 rpms. So if I get a little head start before the hill say around 50 mph I drop down to around 45 at the top and build just enough power to get over with out haveing to worry about down shifting.

So your worried about getting a bigger turbo because you might have to shift into 4th while taking hills at 45 mph. Ok, I really have heard it all now. I see three choices here. Keep the small turbo. Get an automatic transmission. Get a V-8 car. We all have our priorities, I guess you have found yours.

Well the car is a everyday driver. Just wonder how bigger turbos affect everyday driving since it won't see much track time. I'm probably gonna get a evoIII or fp t28, but who know might end up goin bigger...

may I ask why you WANT to go in 5th gear up a hill? why not just downshift to 4th. I hardly take any hills in 5th gear especially at 45mph...i usually base my "shift points" at 3000. I don't cruise in any gear higher than 3k rpm. and going up a hill I usually keep it at 3500....who cares how much boost you make? just drop a gear and give it easy gas up the hill...you won't build boost.

Well with about 1/4 throttle the engine doesn't seem to be bogging at all so I don't down shift goin up the hill.

If I have to give it more then 1/4 throttle and it feel like it's bogging then I will downshift.

Usually I build 0-5 psi while just rolling over the top of the hills around here, I think it's just because I like to hear the turbo spool OMG

Maybe the 2G higher compressiong helps a little bit too :|

Forget the hills, maybe I just should have asked how much boost can a 50 trim under load at low rpms (around 2000 rpms). Of course it would depend on mods such as exhaust and such, but I would assume if one were to have a 50 trim they should have all the supporting mods as well.

I seriously doubt the 50trim will give any boost that low in rpms... Once you get it, you won't ever want to be that low in rpms anyway.

do you drive like a grandma? u sound like my dad, he pulls out of the driveway and shifts so early that the car is practically stalling because the rpm's are so low, hes banging 5th gear at like 5mph

That reasoning you should be driving a honda/toyota.

I feel insulted.

Maybe you shouldn't have a license. :|

How often is a turbo car actually under any kinda boost? Less then 10%?

I just love how the car drives now while under no/low boost situations. Of course the top end suck, but I'm trying to keep the drivabilty of the car while getting the most performance. I'm thinking about going with a fp t28 but I don't think I'll be happy with the back pressure it may create, but I don't wanna go to big where it will affect drivability such as hills, low rpm cruising just to pull ahead of someone a little to merge etc.

So I was wondering how it is from asking you guys but I'm getting conflicting information.

Maybe I don't. :D

I think that would be a user-defined situation.

If your fine with the off-boost power now, then why are you worried about laggy turbos?

One thing to note, with bigger turbos, that flow better (both exhaust & intake sides), the car will have a better VE. So even in off-boost situations, it will have a little more power, then a stock (read- restrictive) turbo.

I think you just need to take a ride in a 20G (or bigger) car, and then make up your own mind. :thumb:

mine's under boost more like 90% of the time

45 mph in 5th gear is a streach for any car turbo or not. Just use 4th gear (if not third) for hills. You actually may be putting more strain on your car if your applied pressure on the gas and not going anyway straining your engine at 2500 rpms to get up a hill in 5th gear. If you like gas milage I'll trade you my civic it get 30 + mph :thumb: . I'll let your car breath a little
