vic,
heres my story:
91 laser n/t manual just about to push over 200 thousand KILOMETERS(Canada), about 120 miles.
started blowing blue smoke the apst few weeks
wanting to turbo my car!!
my questions:
should i go with 2g pistons, or since i am rebuliding anyways go with aftermarket pistons like wiseco 9.0:1 (like my stock compression)?
if aftermarket, which ones?
cometic head gasket or stock mitsu?

i will be using a 16g (probably a small one), supraside mount, 550's, safc, walbro fuel pump(not sure how big yet), full 2.5" or 3"exhaust and intercooler piping, maybe a 2g maf or gm(in the future), 2g mani, turbo cams and thats about all i can think about now. looking for 300-350 whp with logging + tuning.
please give an honest opinion, preferably if you've had experience.
i'm thinking about 2g pistons, compression ratio of 8.5:1 or the wiseco 9.0:1 and a mitsu metal head gasket, but opinions would be great.
thanks in advance and wish me and my tires luck.......

2g will work fine, don't spend that extra money on the pistons. and I only think that your exhaust cam is different from the turbo car, so if you really want to switch cams go for something better.

ya its just the exahust cam, but aftermarket are not only expensive, but ive also heard that they arent good unless your car is heavily modded....like drivability isn't as good.... maybe in the future, but turbo cams will do for now.
any other opinions on pistons?
anyone with experience???

???? still don't know what to do.....what are people using succesfully....any brands i shoud stay away from?

If i had a 1G non turbo and was turbo'n it this is what i would do

USE 2G Pistons!!! They will be more than enough for the mods you want. Lower compression which can produce more boost.
1) Small- Big 16G turbo
2) Intake/Exhaust cams OUT OF A 5spd TURBO
3) Evo Head gasket, or Stock MITSU
4) 1G GST Tranny, more stronger
5) 3 inch Turbo back GST exhaust.
6) 550 injectors
7) 2G mas
8)Turbo Throttle body, (if the NA and Turbo are different)

the throttlebodies are the same, as well as the intake and head...but i'm deffinately swapping out the cams.
thinking small 16 g because i don't just like 1/4 mile times......i want to get into autocross.....and obviousley i'm goin to need some suspension work before i think about taking it out.....
what about the cometic head gasket? how do they compare to stock?
i already have a turbo tranny in......when my tranny went, all i could find was a turbo tranny.......
i would do exhaust and intercooler piping.....and hopefully a supra side mount....
and for 550's and a 2g maf i will need an safc...right?
cars coming off the road in about 2 weeks so more opinions would be appreciated.....

1) lower compresion and 2nd gen pistons
2) 92-94 exhaust cam, because I think 91 turbo exhaust cam is the same as n/t
3) rebuild the head, since it's such a big milage and I'm pretty sure it's leaking oil and compresion
4) turbo (pick one)
5) 2nd gen exhaust matifold, or evoIII
6) might wonna go with supra side mount ic
7) get teh piping
8) and all the rest of the stuff

haha i also rebuilt the head about a year ago.....pick the car up for 500 canadian because the t-blet went.....
2nd gen pistons would give me lower compression.....this would make tuning easier than with 9:1 compression...
there are actually quite a few different grinds on cams.......seen a few good articles of peoples research......all the intakes are close to the same with certain letters(stamped on the gear end of the cam) that are a little more aggressive.....
on the exhaust, there are 2 different groups: the turbo MT cars from 91-94 got the more aggressive cam, while every other 1g got a lower lift/duration cam.
2g mani and o2 as well as a supra side mount would be very nice....and all the piping will come with time.
thinkin of going straight to 550's and safc for a 16g(probably small)
parts are going to be ordered in about 2 weeks.....gonna be breaking the bank......
any more opinions?
thanks for all the help guys

I don't know make sure to get a good headgasket that will hold the boost, also you will need a walbro fuel pump, and some managment for those 550s, and a decent clutch 2100 should be good for fwd. Also you might as well get a supra side mount IC, and a 1st gen BOV, and the whole exhaust crap

well i'm gonna start ordering parts next week....thinking about 2g pistons and a mitsu metal head gasket....but there are a nice set of 8.5:1 ross pistons that i'm looking at....what would be the benefit of these over stock 2g? would i be able to run higher boost?

yeah, you would but I don't know what would be the price difference. Maybe it would be better investing in something else

Why not just pick up a used 1G turbo motor, you can find them with most of the accessories....or you could buy a 1G turbo car with a blown trans or hit in the rear or something...
