i have a 90 tsi, and i pulled the timing belt off to change the water pump. before i took off the t belt i just lined up the 2 cam gears not the rest, i figured nothing would get moved so it wouldnt matter, well unfourtunately my balance belt was broke so i hvae to take the crankshaft sproket off. so the crank was moved quite a bit. how do i re time, there has to be a way!!
 
The only trick is getting the rear balance shaft in phase. The rest is simple, line the marks up.
You are replacing all the normal TB parts, right? Don't forget to check and possible replace the various seals on the front side so you don't have to do another out of schedule TB change.

im getting everything replaced, but i thought there was more to it then just lining up the timing marks. cant the pistons be off? Ive tried reading up on this, but no real info.
 
Read the VFAQ description a couple of times.

The simplest timing mark is the crankshaft, when that is aligned you have #1 piston at TDC. The problem is that the other marks are off by some ratio, you can actually turn the crank 6 turns before a complete cycle is completed on all the marks.

The cam gears are pretty easy because you can see whether the pin is at 12:00-high or not. The oil pump shaft is also a balance shaft, and that one is easy to get wrong, but read the VFAQ it's actually simple to get it right. The upper balance shaft, the one with it's own belt, is straightforward.

The main thing to remember is that if you line up all the marks, you can still be very wrong; the marks need to be lined up properly with other alignment operations performed in parallel (like putting the cam gears at 12 and synchronizing the balance shaft).

Pull the plugs if you are going to be turning the crank, it makes it easier because you aren't fighting compression.
 
seems pretty strait forward then, i just made a mess with not doin the TDC when i took it apart
 
I didnt have to pull the crank sprocket off when I replaced mine... I just gently fed it around it and turned the crank til it fit. Did not gouge it or maim it at all.

leet :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: man i owe u a beer (or pop!!!) I just did that in 2 minuets, all i did was ease the belt on and turned the crank!!!

***UPDATE***

Well i have just about everything put back together, just have one question for you guys, how does the alternator pully tensioner thing (not very technical, am I) go on. I totaly forgot, pictures would be great, I know the bracket comes off the block and then then goes to the alternator with that bolt tensioner.
