which aftermarket turbo is available while considering smog checks here in Cali? im thinking T28 but what about the ever popular 16Gs? Any others? Oh, and how about the 14B in a 2G?
 
T28 has the same exact housing as the T25.

16G will look different.
 
There's a fellow here who had some pretty serious mods done and still passed.

There are two issues, one is the "visual" inspection and the other is the actual tail-pipe test. The visual is highly subjective and that's where the turbo, or any other visible mod, can be a problem. The tail-pipe test is actually not that hard to pass. If the car is tuned, you shouldn't be blowing lots of emissions unless you do something fairly radical.

For the visual, you just need to find a smog station that isn't going to fall over dead if you have the wrong color vacuum hose.
 
I was leaning towards a big 16g but if smog is going to be a hassle with it then i guess back to T28. What about the 14B swap?
 
Very few smog shops will be able to tell what the turbo is...as long as its not too big and doesn't look after market (like a T3/T4 or a turbo with polished housing) then they probably won't know.

I'm sure big16g, T28, or 14b will pass with ease since they are "small" turbos and smog guys wont know the difference.
 
what about all the extra parts such as the install kits thats involved? the Jpipe and the oil /water lines?
