Can a BR580 be a successful street turbo?

I am currently looking into getting a BR580 turbo for my 1991 GST. I am looking for tuner help/opinions on if I can run this turbo on the street with my car and how much useable HP I could get.

Mods that matter for question:
Denso 720cc injectors
Ported 2G exhaust manifold
3" Downpipe/testpipe/exhaust
RRE intake w/3 inch intake pipe
Dejon Tool LICP and UICP
Dejon modded SMIC
NGK colder plugs
Taylor 8mm wires
Hacked 1G MAF
SAFC
Poly motormounts
Centerforce 2500 clutch
STOCK MOTOR w/150 compression

I drive this car about 4-5 days a week. My main goals are to be able to seriously hang with BPU+ Supras and modded Vettes that roam around ON THE FREEWAY. No drag racing just roll racing but also daily driving. Can this turbo be used for that or is it just too big? Thanks alot for the help.

Unless you plan to get a lot more mods a run race fuel, then that turbo really isnt going to be able to provide what you are looking for on the street with pump gas and ths few mods....

check this link out, i always liked ths one http://fullyrace.com/car.html

The turbo isn’t your big problem your NEED a FMIC there is no way around that. You cant run any serious turbo through a sidemoutnt and expect it to work well. Especially if you are doing long highway pulls. If you put a fuel pump, cams, and a FMIC on that list I think you would be fine though.

Why on earth do you feel you need a turbo that huge. To simply drive around on the street? Its Just not needed, a simple 50 trim would fit any goals you have perfectly and spool quicker then you can imagine.

However having the most popular turbo out is very cool and will provide hours of conversation and arm chair racing. Just think you can say in a very macho tone, I have a GT40 turbo:laugh:

The point is if you want to go with a buschur turbo. The br500 may suit you're needs much better then something as huge as a br580.

Happy Boosting.

Thanks for the input, its not that I am buying a BR580 it is that someone was looking to trade me my turbo+ some cash for his BR580.

Okay, so now that that is basically ruled out, what about a Turbonetics big T3TO4E .62 A/R?

Same goals, different turbo. Thanks again for all your input, I am trying to learn.....

These are specific because they are deals I have readily available. Do you know anything about the above turbo or opinions on it? Thanks.

Correct its an compressor housing and an exhaust housing. That does not descibe the wheels contained in those housings.

T76? Dont you mean T31?

OK. #1, get everything else you need first. #2 decide what you want. #3, Stop calling it a BR580!!! It is a PTE SCM61, or 56trim. Buschure simply buys and rebadges someone else's product. Only AGP and I believe FP make them.

I have the 56trim/T350(not T76). It spools decent, but NOTHING like a 50trim. Many well setup 50trims will blow me away on the track. Now, with that said. My car will pretty much destroy any 50trim on an open road. Is it streetable? I drive the car every day, and it gets 25+ mpg. And like I said, it spools decent. Im getting 25psi by 4300rpm. Also, this has been on pump gas for the last several months. The turbo is currently internally gated, making 25psi the lowest it will stay at. And everyones info, Im still getting 11degs. on a stock ECU with occaisional blips to 14 degs, indicating knock is not as severe as you might think. And it has been up to 28psi.(Ask rdrkt about this one. He was in the car at the time) And I will meet any bolt on 50trim on the Dyno any day.

So it remains what your after. If you want stop light to stop light. And if you want many 1/4 mile races under your belt, get the 50trim. if you all out power, and to be able to destroy most anything on the highway, get the 56trim. I suggest you get the 50trim, simply because that is the perfect turbo for 99% of DSMers out there.

I stand corrected, i meant 76 trim t31. sorry for posting bad info everyone.

.

Wow that's pretty bold. You also spelled Buschur wrong. I was under the impression that along with the wiseman title. Good grammar and factual responses were included. To say you will destroy any 50 trim on the open road. Seems like bench racing, but what do I know:)

Happy Boosting

I think you'll be far happier, in the long run, if you spend the extra money to get the turbo you want/need rather than acquiring one because it was a good deal. Or you could always sell the BR580 and buy one that suits your needs.

Actually it was 12.1@117. What does Dave have to do what that? Are you insinuating that my claims are inflated? I assure they are not. Please do not base the feasibility of what I have done with my car. On what you have and have not done. I am not you, and you don't have my car.

I have all the info i need thanks:thumb:

J/k I got nothing but love for ya babe:D

out of curiousity, how much power did you make with your setup?

He hasnt dynoed it yet we are waiting for the local shop to complete installation of their awd dyno. He also tried to get it to the track but all the bikes kept him from being able to run. On the street it feels pretty damn fast.

Well, I guess I will just wait and get a 50trim from PTE. I have been told many times now that my dejontool SMIC will heat soak with the 56 trim. I am not looking to stoplight race being that I am FWD but I was looking for a good turbo for 40-120mph punch races.

Thanks for the help and no thanks for the hijack.

The 50 trim is a good choice but I would try to take a look at AGP or FP to get it. I am not a huge fan of PTE and their assembly line turbo building. I have had too many problems with their turbos.

Also you WILL heatsoak your sidemount with ANY upgraded turbo on a long highway pull. It doesn’t matter if you have a 50 trim a Gt40 or a T88.

Wow, I haven't heard anyone having problems with PTE, what happened in your case?

So you don't think my Dejon SMIC will hold up for racing with a 50 trim? I would think it would cool effiecently enough to run about 18psi on a cool night.....

You're underestimating the size of a 50 trim. A Dejon SMIC is just too small for something that big.

Thanks Mike, I didn't understand that. What about running it with a Co2 hanger/sprayer or alchohol sprayer? Thanks.

LOL, thats just the thing though. I just bought the Dejon tool SMIC, LICP and UICP and am not going to just eat that cost, I need to use it. So I am trying to see if I could use this combo:

Dejon SMIC+alchy sprayer+PTE 50 trim.

sprayer won't help that small SMIC. iduno why u got that thing in the first place, u could ahve gotten a used street core for the cost u piad for the UIC, LIC and that SMIC.

Even with the turbo I have in the garage for u will heatsoak that lil SMIC. It just doesn't flow enough.
