Send another picture, the counterweights will be sculpted in a way to go through the oil easier with less resistance. Here is an extreme example.

what part of the crank do they touch because the parts where the pisotns connect to the shaft look the same but the back looks different

Look at the "sharp" areas, areas that would be down the farthest and pass through the oil in the oilpan.
