has anyone been able to locate a big name parts store that sells the timing belt tensioner tool. i have had no luck finding this tool or order availability from places like the dealer, Napa, autozone pepboys..ect
 
I haven't looked for one directly but I just made one using the VFAQ. You just thread your battery tie down further and it works perfectly. Its very easy to do and the die costs about $3. If you don't plan on doing timing belts every couple weeks, I say that is the easiest way to go.
 
I've used the DIY tool and after 3 times it got stuck. Even locking with 2 nuts didn't help because thread got all f'd up. SPX tools is the only place that sells one... for $33. Dealerships do not carry those anymore.

i just jam a big ass screwdriver into one of the small holes and tighten the tensioner down. works for me:)
 
huh? there's only one small hole and big ass screw driver won't fit in there. besides i doubt you could compress the tensioner by hand.
 
Miler specialty tools sell all the timing belt stuff you need. I bought them but my friend lost them for me :(

An easy way to do it is line up the holes where they go somewhat flat across. Holes on top. The tighten down the pulley.

Then use the long bolts on the tensioner and use it to pull it in place. Then when you relase the clip in the tensioner it should be tight.

If your doing a swap, all you really need to do is just take the tesnioner off and not touch the tensioner pulley. Put the tensioner in a c clamp or vice. Vice it down then put a small cotter pin, or allen wrench in the hole (use these because a parper clip is to weak) Then go bolt it back on the car and pull the pin and everyhting should be retensioned how it was before you took the belt off.
 
my point was i dont use the tool. i jam a screwdriver into one of the small holes on the tensioner pulley itself and tighten the bolt. only time i would use that tool is to change cams.

what the hell are you babling about? jdmawd was asking about tool that threads in and compresses the tensioner not the tool used to rotate the pulley. and how exactly would you use that to change cams? :confused:

exactly,i stopped a snapon guy today he look at me like i was nuts. he had no clue what i was asking for. then i went to extreme and rob said they got the ones they use from snapon:confused: ill try miller and spx i really need to get this done while the intake manifold is off.
 
When I called SPX they didn't know what I was talking about until I gave them part #. After that lady was like "oh, we show that as a adjusting bolt"
 
I work at a Chrysler dealer and Bought those tools for my 96 , but sometimes miller will not sell unless you have a account number.
The Tensioner tool I bought from Matco Tools and you cannot use a Torque Wrench with it so I bought the one from SPX instead.
I might be able to help getting these tools if you cannot get your hands on them.
