Ok here is a pic of my autometer Z series EGT probe and crappy instructions. What size drill bits and what size tap am I gonna need to install this probe? It looks like the instructions say that the thread that would screw into the tapped hole on the manny is 1/8" NPT but it looks more like 1/4 inch... Do they mean the probe itself is 1/8"? If so then How do I figure out what tap to pick up.

So basically I'm trying to figure out which bits to pick up, what size tap, and also what high temp thread lock will work best? Thanks for any help :thumb:

Also my car is a 99 GST so where do u think the best spot would be for this probe...It looks longer then some other probes out there.

you need a 1/8'' NPT tap. it's best to place it on the cylinder #1 runner(closest to the timing belt) on the exhaust manny. place it about 6 inches about from the head on that runner. i am about to do the same install with the same probe, so i was also wondering what kind of thread lock to use. i am almost positive any kind if teflon would melt.

the threading on the part that screws into the manifold is 1/8th inch npt. go to a nut and bolt store and ask them for a 1/8th inch npt tap. you will want to start with a small drill and slowly work your way up, i cant remember what the final size is. if you try to start with a large bit it will take forever to bite and when it finally does it wil get jammed. the probe did seem a little long to me too, so i tapped mine in the raised section that one of the heat shield screws into on the #1 runner. im gonna try to find a pic of my engine to give you a better idea.

Should I tap all the way thru the manny or just far enough to where the bung will bite good? I don't want to not tap all the way and risk having a part of the manny chip off and kill my precious baby t25.

I'm probably goin to do all this with the car off and use a magnet to pick up the metal inside the manny. Of course using small bits and working up to larger ones just in case..

I just did this install on Saturday. the manifold is surprisingly easy to drill into. Took 10 seconds. I already had the turbo off because i was installing a BIG28 Killer so I didn't bother using a smaller bit. Tapping was a little tricky with the manifold still mounted to the engine. Once you get it started a 9mm socket worked great to finish. Tap it with an 1/8" tap and torque the fitting down. It will only screw about halfway in. The hardest part is getting the wires and gauge mounted. LOL. should take a whole 30-45 mins.

One word of advise, use a 1/2" drill bit for the heat shield and enlarge the hole a little so the fitting will pop through. I took a picture, but i have to load it first. If anyone wants to see it I'll post it.

there is a reason to use smaller to larger bits other then the size of the metal shavings. if you start off with a big bit, when it bites it will (usually, i guess you got lucky) lock up, and if you keep on locking it up you will burn out your drill. and it is also not a good idea to use a socket or a wrench or the like, because since you are pulling from one side it is easy to get crooked, which will make youre little project a long one. use a T-handle instead. also when youre tapping make sure to use alot of oil.

also, people might say to just leave the mani on and run the car while youre doing it, but, well, its your turbo. if i did this a second time my manifold would definately be off.

about what greyforestgst said, good luck getting someone at home depot to find a 1/8th npt tap

SOAFB! $25 later I finally have 1/8 tap and a couple bits...

HD sux balls. Some girl wanted me to use some weld glue stuff...

What I'm goin to do is use a 1/4" bit, then a 21/64 bit, then tap the manny.

I still need to find parts for my boost gauge install...What size do I need for the fuel pressure hose?!? I know the boost size is 1/8"...
