I was trading a friend for a chip to put into my car. When we pulled out the computer and looked inside, it didn't have any socket for a chip. What's up wit dat? Are only certain years EPROM'd?

Jay,

So the 90's only had ECUs that weren't EPROM'd?

Hmm... so what year did they make socketed chips?

That's it chief. The 1990 is the bastard year...or should it be the retard year? LOL

The transfer case, coil pack and a few other small things are different as well. You can swap in 91+ ECU but you have to swap other things and repin.

I used to have an 1990 TSI AWD last year and I sold it, but anyways ... mine had an EEPROM ECU from the factory. The car was made in Dec 1989. If you want a 90 EEPROM ECU there are several on the trader and
on Ebay.

No kidding? Hmph, you learn something new everyday. But just for the record, the majority of 90's do not have an Eprom, and ARE different from the other years.

The majority of DSMs in general don't have EPROM ECUs. The pattern seems to have been to release a small number of ECUs with a given firmware revision in EPROM before committing to the mask-ROM version.

hahahaha i got my car with an eprom and the build date was june 89. my car so far has been perfect. no power windows no power door locks and it had an eprom. no wonder its so freaking fast. scary. jay, remember that i ran 13.2? well i found some minor stuff wrong with it so i r&red the head and redid the timing belt and it pulls almost as hard now on 15 psi as it did on 20 psi on race gas. ill be right there in the 12's mostly stock with ya soon. god i love these cars.
