I did some searching and didn't come up with a definitive answer to this question, so sorry if this has been asked several times. I am thinking about buying an AWD 92 TSI that has a blown Center Differential. If I buy it I won't be able to fix the diff until a while later. What exactly do I have to do to drive it as a front wheel drive for the time being. Is it as simple as disconnection the driveshaft? Thanks
 
Well you could try and do that, i have no experience but remember you will be driving with only like %30 of the power, cause a AWD i believe is like %70 back wheels and %30 front wheels. I wouldnt suggest it.
 
no,that is incorrect. our cars work on viscous coupling and have a constant 50/50 torque split. you would probably be better off removing the transfer case too and then fab up(or get a machine shop to) a plate to cover the hole in the transmission so you don't lose all your tranny fluid,probably not the best idea but it should work just fine as a temporary fix.
 
If you have another car... just let it sit and collect dust untill you can afford to get a center diff for it..
 
Um, if the center diff is BROKEN you are not going anywhere with that car in any form.

The only way to go FWD in an AWD car is to put in a welded center diff or center diff eliminator (spool) and disabling the rwd portion.
 
Jay is right. Remember that power goes to the path of least resistance even with a LSD. If your broken on one end it will turn there only and the other end will get no power at all unless it's welded and forced to power both ends.

That is what keeps you from hitting the was instantly if your car breaks a shaft while racing because the power is not instantly transfered all to one wheel it goes to the shaft that is broken and not doing anything and your car stalls... Much nicer than hitting the wall and ruining your car.
 
It will cost more to Butcher the car into a FWD in parts and labor then to just fix it correctly,

I was under the impression that the AWD cars were 60/40. With the most power being supplied to the front wheels, and the least power to the rear. This would allow the car to grip when the car rocks back on a launch, but once it lunges forward it would pull itself. I don't have much experience with the AWD platform though. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks.
 
There's a center diff on eBay now, couple hundred.

And yes, the factory thinks it's 50/50, too. Good enough for me. Them Soobaroos favor the nose, though. They don't trust us with a fair split.
