How to spot a good block.

I just blew up my head the other day and was wondering how I can tell if the block is still good without removing it from the car. The gasket is trashed and there is a piece of metal missing near one of the valves in the actual head.

What kinds of things should I look for and is there a way to test to make sure the pistons and rings and stuff are ok. I dont want to bolt the new head on and try to start it if it could cause more damage.

check for warpage and look at the cylinder walls to make sure there arent any big scratches or gouges.
