Im getting my car back next week (finally). #1)Ive got a brand new 6 Bolt tossed in, and it was recommended in a seperate post (that I cant find now :() the a new motor should use conventional oil for about 5K miles for break in and to let the piston rings seat. Is this true? I plan on using synthetic so Id like to know if I must start off with conventional. #2) if I must use conventional first, should I flush the system before switching to synthetic oil? And lastly, #3), which synthetic would you guys recommend? Im thinking either Castrol synthetic, Mobil1 synthetic, or Pennzoil sythetic? Thanks for any input.

yes you should use conventional oil to break a motor in then switch to synthetic.

p.s. yes have the oil system flushed then add what ever syn. oil you like, most of the time it is personal prefernce as for as what brand to use. stay away from quaker state. ooops did i say that out loud.

The "use conventional first" has a couple of roots.

One is that you're going to throw it away very quickly, so why bother paying for oil formulated for long-term stability?

Another is the (insulting 8) insinuation that it doesn't lubricate quite as well, so it allows for a little more bearing surface wear during the break-in period.

Ask your engine builder what they recommend. Since you'll be going back to them for any warranty work, you want to be sure that they are happy with how you've treated their engine...

Any automotive store (advance, pep boys, etc.) carry this big silver can called motor flush. It works well and is pretty easy to follow the directions for use. Castrol is the way to go as far as oil in my opinion. Good luck:thumb:

for the first 7,500 miles use Mitsu oil, it maybe be expensive but i work at a Jeep/Eagle dealership and its the best oil to start out with, plus dont beat on the car until after 750 miles
good luck

I'm gonna speak up for Amsoil. I think it's the best oil out there-- and they have their own engine flush too. I've been using Amsoil for almost a year with absolutely no problems. You can also go longer between changes with it, as with most synthetics, so the cost pretty much evens out with conventional oil. And the Amsoil filters are really good too, even though they're a little pricey.

Amsoil claims you can break in a car with their oil with no problems..I use it, its awesome...Amsoil warranties their oils for their claimed mileage also, for example, Series 2000 Amsoil is good for 35,000 miles in an NA car, or 3x normal intervals for turbo cars or up to one year...whichever is first.

I should also mention that Mobil 1 "Synthetic" is not even that. Mobil one took Castrol to court because castrol was using a process called hydrocracking to super refine conventional oil because it is cheaper that using true synthetic base stocks...Mobil 1 lost that court case and has since switched their oil to the same super-refined dino oil.

Also, new Lancer Evos come from the FACTORY with Mobil 1 synthetic, same with the C5 corvette and other late model LS1 equipped cars. So that break in with conventional is BS IMO. Any questions, feel free to contact me.

Theres now way in hell i would use a cheap oil on a newly built motor.
I use Royal purple and i think its one of the best syns out there.

i should be an authorized amsoil dealer soon if anyone is interested in buying it...should be discounting to DSMers...

I just got through building my 2nd gen block and JE said that the synthetic oil lubricates the piston rings a little too well for the break-in period. They said to go organic for the first thousand then switch.

And yeah i'd go with castrol. It's the only brand to use.

I would be.. I know a guy that use's that oil in his home made turbo jet engines.. (long cool story) anyway it holds up WAY better than Mobil 1.. (thats what he was useing before) and considering that Turbo jet engines realy test the oil alot harder than any piston engine in a normal car ever will.. i'll take Amsoil.. :thumb:

:talon:

i know that most people say that mobil1 is the best, but i beg to differ. i am using mobil 1 right now because i was told by advance that no one carrys it anymore (come to find out napa as a surplus of the shit, and they don't plan on stop selling it). mobil 1 is the 2nd best i found out. it makes the engine run smooth and takes away most of the tick, but not all. when royal purple takes away all the tick and makes it run like a champ. i wouldn't use anything else, but that's just from my experience with my car, every car is gonna react diff. mobil 1 is like $5 a quart and royal purple is like $7. it costs $8 more to fill it up, but well worth it.

i have to pick up some oil 2day and change it. anyone got any more info on amsoil? i have hear that it's good stuff, but very expensive also. i've just been going with mobil 1 since i can pick up 6 quarts @ wal mart for like $29.

i saw that ebay is selling that royal purple stuff @ $48 for 12 + shipping.

check out www.fattonyracing.com and go to the part that says "FTR Product Reviews" (that needs to be changed to reviews/tech)... and i did an oil comparison between some of the leading oils, including Amsoil.

You might want to make note of that in the test results you posted on the oil comparison.
