I have a 99 GST w/34,000 miles right now. I want to really learn about cars. I know how to do simple bolt ons like intake, exhaust, etc. But I want to build up a 6 bolt. How much do you think it will cost to get me started (I have no signs of crankwalk so this will be a loooong project that I will take my time with). Is this a good way to learn? I'm not short on cash but don't want to just be throwing out the window either. Also is there any step by step directions on doing the swap? I searched and found one about trimming something and bookmarked it, but there wasn't full directions for the swap.

Even though I concider myself lucky and found a good deal, I found my COMPLETE 6 Bolt for $600 (brand new head, 60K on block). I was originally gonna JUST buy the block for $400. So prolly around $300-$500 for the bottom end is a safe bet (depending on milage). Used head will run between $150-$300 (again, depending on milage). Youll need the 6 Bolt flywheel, and if you buy a '90 6 Bolt, youll need to purchase an external oil cooler. Swap should be pretty straight forward, make sure you replace all gaskets necassary during the install, you should be set.

For more info, there may be some on VFAQ (aka your best friend ;) ) :

The RRE and Magnus "parts needed" swap list is different. RRE modifies a 2G oil pump cover and tensioner while Magnus stays with 1G parts (there are other parts that differ too). So which is the better guide to follow?

The magnus moethod makes the roadrace obsolete. Doing all that extra work is a pain in the ass.

Just use the 1g CAS. And either get dsm link or do the barometer mod.

If you want to learn about cars I would take an automotive class at your local community college. LarryD is right though that a lot of the work needs to be done by a machine shop. But if you buy a used 6 bolt, you could take the thing apart, make all the measurements, determine what needs to be and/or what you would like to replace based on your power goals. I wouldn't dive right into building a motor without some training. You might also consider buying a junk engine/car to take apart and fool around with.

pm me too if your looking for a motor to build up.ive got one that need a machine shop and makes a good project motor.ill sell it mad cheap.

Thanks for all the replies. I plan on buying a used 6 bolt this summer, my budget will probably be about $4,000 and I don't expect to put it in my car till at least next summer 2004. I do have someone who is very experienced in engines and has all the tools (engine stand, a tool to bore out the cylinders, and a lot of other crap that I have no idea what they are for). He will help me in all of this, he doesn't have any experience with DSM's but know engines well (used to build them when he worked in Africa) and he just bought a used 94 Maxima for $200 that had a jacked up engine and wouldn't start. He took it apart (I mean everything, down to the pistons), cleaned, and replaced alot of parts, now it runs like new.
