I'm wondering if anyone has any definitive first-hand experience with using a 1G coilpack and transistor on a 2G car (perhaps when doing a 1st gen headswap). Howabout mixing the two, i.e. using a 2G coilpack with a 1G transistor, or the other way around. I know for a fact that the part number for a 1G transistor is different than that of a 2G transistor. I also know the coilpack has differences. If anyone knows, please reply.

The transistor or what's more commonly refered to as an "ignitor" are pretty universal as to the coils they can fire as most coils are designed with near similar specs as well (yes, there are exceptions before anyone jumps down my case on that one)

The only difference in the transistors that mitsubishi used was that some of them had an extra pin for a tach out put and the rest got their tach output from the ECU counting teh crank angle sensor.

I'f your stock one has a middle pin labeled "Tac" on the ignitor, then you will need that unit. I run one of those on my 2g car, with a 1g motor and stand alone ECU. All of them are the same to the computer's eye. Ass the settings stay teh same no matter what mitsu ignitor i'm running. I believe the most common one (at least in the markets of austrailia, japan) is the J722T module w/ tach output.

There are at least two versions of the Power Transistor. The version with the tach pulse output was used from 91 to 99 in different mounting brackets between 1G and 2Gs. The one without a tach output was used on the 1990 cars where the tach pulse was generated by a module on the coil pack (not the ECU). The ECU uses the the signal from either the Power Transistor or the coil pack tach gate to verify that the coil did fire.
 
Oh my bad, had it backwards. I'm not the DSM expert but i consider myself decently educated in them. I do tend to remember thing sbackwards sometimes though :p

Also, since you have a 2G, the 1990 coil packs have a 4 pin connector that allows the tach signal. 91-99 coil packs have a 3 pin connect cause the tach signal is coming from the transistor.

No problem. I could tell by the use of ignitor, it's not a term you'll find in the Factory Service Manuals. :)

Yea, i just call them ignitors, because of the half a hundred stand alone manuals I've read usually all refer to them as the igniter. When i first came on here i was trying to figure out what the hell the "power transistor" was LOL
 
I assume that you're doing a 1G headswap and wanted to keep the coilpack bracket with the 1G coils. I did this when I put a 1G head on my 2G as well. Personally, I had issues with using 1G coils on a 2G ignitor. I have spoken to many folks who stated that this should not have happened, but it did anyway. I would experience all kinds of wierd effects with the 1G/2G setup, like hard starting, intermittent misfire, and some stumbling under boost. I tried three different ignitors and three different coil packs, all with the same results. I finally hacked the 1G coil pack bracket to accept my old 2G coils, and ignition has been great since.
