I figured I would share my short weekend story because it may help somebody in the future.
My 91 4g63 turbo engine in my truck never EVER EVER wanted to start when it was cold out. I have been trying and trying to figure out why the heck this was happening for weeks now and this past weekend I figured it out. After pulling the fuel rail out and actually watching injectors fire, I knew I was getting gas. I also did a compression check and found about 150-160 psi across the board. I pulled spark plug wires off, like I had done a million times before, and put a random spark plug in it to test for spark, which there was plenty of.....
Now this was making no sense.....so I pulled the individual spark plugs out and noticed that they were some no-name company, and decided to test them to see how they were sparking. Well, needless to say, they barely put out any spark at all, and none of the spark was going to the electrode, it was jumping everywhere.......
I then proceeded to get some NGK's and toss them in the old 4g63. It started up with no problem at all!!!!! runs like a dream now....... Moral is, just because the spark is sparking doesnt mean its a good enough spark to make the engine run.
Thats my story, hope you liked it.!
