My buddy is getting a Garrett T3/T4 hybrid and it requires an adapter plate to bolt up to the stock manifold. Should he buy a new manifold, or keep the current one with the adapter plate? And is it true that they are notorious for leaking?

They shouldn't assuming the manifold is straight. If they are both dead on he will not have any trouble.

They leak. Get a tubular manifold as the adaptor plates are clownshoes and don't mate up well with the stock mani/garrett. Also a flow impedance issue. Don't be of the "Happy Hanukah" persuasion and spend the money on a Garrett manifold.
