I have a heavily modded 1st gen that runs 11.0 i also drive it on the street ..but i would like to make a drain on my gas tank instead of loosing that bolt on the bottom of the tank and getting gas every where when i wanna drain my pump gas and put race gas in or vice versa..i think the bolt is a 16mm with a 24 mm head on it..i wanna make a valve so when i wanna drain the tank i just turn the knob like a sink ...anyone ever done this ..seems kinda hard getting a 16mm fitting cause i dont wanna mess up the tank and retread it to npt pipe then it will be easy ..

I don't much like the idea, either, but adapters.
I'd rather see either a tee on the fuel line using the fuel pump, or a separate pump just for draining. Tradeoff, I guess.

you might try one of those fram quickdrain oil change adapters. threads into the stock hole and then you just unscrew a cover and clip their special hose on.

why would it be dangerous ..its just a valve to open and close...
Um maybe because you said "knob like a sink," which a 2 year old can turn. So we immediately all pictured a piece of debris knocking it loose while you are barreling down the track, gas spilling on your exhaust, igniting and you burning to death in a fireball of poor safety equipment. No tech inspection would let you race with it anyway, if they saw it. And I'd never ask to be your passenger.

I like the Fumoto valve idea if you really want to do it this way. http://www.fumotovalve.com/

I went to buy one of those and the guy behind the counter said they got recalled because they kept failing and draining oil at the wrong time.

More likely they've run out of them. No sign of a recall on the mighty internaweb, and Summit, Amazon and others still sell them. No mention of them anymore on Fram's site, so the million or two they had made are apparently all sold.
Not that a parts counter man would ever just talk out his ass, or anything.

Just do like the rest of the planet does and pull the return line off the regulator, and put a 4-6 foot line from the reg to the gas jug, and let the fuel pump drain the tank for you. No mess, no jacking up or getting under the car, etc. ;)

I'm sorry, but my hIghsKool to english translator isn't working. But you certainly do not need a laptop if you pull the return line. Just start the car. Leaving gas around in the pits in a "pan" sounds risky as well, I prefer 5 gallon gas jugs. If you really want to do it this way I'm not here to argue, but there is indeed a reason that no one does it this way any more :)

I wouldn't do it to my car. I've worked for years with ball valve style drains for a long time and they always end up leaking and thats just running water through them. Its not really worth the risk. I'm not 100% sure about the track regualtions on somthing like that also.

Exactly what I was going to recommend as well.

This is also how most guys drained their tank to enter the building at a HIN show. We've done it many, many times. :dsm:

I really like this idea, but wouldn't using the pump to pull all the gas out of the tank cause the pump to suck up all the sludge out of the bottom of the tank and stick it in your fuel filter? Or for that matter, isn't it bad to run your fuel pump dry? The only reason I ask this is because changing out the fuel filters on any 2G is a huge pain in the ass.

I usually just time my mileage when I go to the track and keep a five gallon jug of race gas with me. Not the best idea when you're trying to fully seperate race gas and the small amount of what's left in the tank, but I really hate changing fuel filters.

Matt.

Well, I've used this method to drain fuel, but never to completely empty the tank, so I cannot comment.

Ehh, I gave up on pump gas this past summer. I just run Sunoco 110 daily. No more maintaining two separate tunes, and no more trying to keep two different fuels separated. :rocks:

The picking up sludge thing isn't an issue. The pump always pulls from the bottom of the tank no matter how much fuel is in it, so the only way running it dry is going to make you pick up sludge is if the sludge floats. :) Running the pump dry is potentially a problem however. The trick is to shut it off when it's sputtering enough that it's really not moving much fuel (for example, letting it sputter for 5 minutes to get out one cupful of fuel is not going to be worth it). I've been doing this for ~5 years and never had a pump fail. I also do 30k+ miles per year so my pumps aren't exactly installed in trailer or jackstand queens. Also never had to change a filter.

i just got done brothers i will post pic's in a few ,,came out nice no leaks ..alot better then removing the reg line and making the pump ran dry and sucking up crap :) surprised no one has done this before

here are some pic's its a pain in the ass to do ..but it worth it ..open the coc into a oil pan then into a jug easy as pie ;) no laptop need no tools, sucking up crap in the bottom of the tank making hte pump run dry and ###ing it up ..and then all the crap in the tank will all come out of the drain ..and u can filter it back in to ## tank to make it nice and clean again ..cause remember these cars are 15 year old already ....i didnt have to drill retap nothing so it bolts right in ..i can alway put the stock bolt in if i want :thumb:

It looks like you took the stock drain plug, and drilled it out. Then tapped the hole for 1/8(?) NPT fitting, then threaded in the petcock. How bout a little write-up. What size drill bit to drill out the hole. What size tap? Which petcock?
