Vaughan,
What seals the thermostat housing to the head? Did a search but couldn't find anything.

Have a look below. There doesn't seem to be a gasket. How do I seal this?

I looked at the housing on my car. There is no sign of a gasket and no gap between the mating surfaces. There is grey RTV pushing out in spots. I have never taken this housing off so it's still probably still the factory seal.

The thermostat has a rubber gasket around it that seals between 10118 and 10100. If you aren't feeling confident in the manufactors sealing method you can put a little rtv between the two as well.

Edit: hrm... I think I miss read your post, you are talking about how 10100 seals to the block. That I don't know, RTV I think would do the trick. I have never taken that off myself so I don't know.

RTV is what you use. There is no gasket for it. Just make sure after it starts to set that you stick your finger in the housing and clean the excess from the inside so it doesn't break free and plug something in your cooling system up.

Bringing this one back to life. I have now tried using blue rtv and copper rtv to no avail. Then I came across this topic. How important is it to use grey? Will it make a difference?

thanks!

The copper one should work. That's what I have on my car right now.
You can try using the grey to see if it makes any difference. Make sure you follow the
directions on the tube so apply the RTV to thermostat housing and mount it on to the head but only finger tighten the nuts. Give it some time to get tacky (I think its about an hour or so) and then you can tighten them with a wrench. Make sure the surface is clean and free of any grease/antifreeze/etc.

That gasket is not the one the OP is asking about. That one goes between 10118 and 10100 (if you look at the picture in the first post). It's the gasket that goes between the two halves of the the thermostat housing, not the thermostat housing and the head.
