Last night I replaced my TB shaft seals because of a leak test I did last week. I heard leaking around the TB, but couldn't feel anything and narrowed it down to possible seal leakage.

First of all, let me say that this is the biggest PITA for such a small job. My throttle plate did NOT want to slide back into the shaft at all. I almost smashed the TB with a large hammer trying to get those springs wound up and back on. Anway..on to the problem.

When I started the car there was a rather large hiss coming from the TB area. It sounds a little like a boost leak does when the system is under pressure. (keep in mind this is at idle)

Also, my idle is all over the damn place all of a sudden. I didn't move the throttle stop, and I set the TPS just as the manual says, which I have done before without any problem.

My main question is, could the hissing sound be caused by air rushing past the throttle plate. Like I said I REALLY had to work to get the plate back in there. I am wondering if my throttle plate is on upside down or something, or if it really matters all that much. I do know that the correct side is facing the passenger side of the car.

Could someone that has a close up picture of a throttle body please post it up if possible, and if anyone knows what the hell could be going on here please chime in. Thanks.

I just replaced mine, and i know what you mean, it wasn't fun. I used these two procedures (links below) to help me out. There are several pics included at both sites, hopefully one of those will be able to help you out. Was there a lot of carbon build up on your throttle plate? mine had a ton which made it hard to put back on but if you clean some of it off it made it easier to put back on. I'm assuming you have a 1g throttle body, I've never heard of the 2g's having a problem with their throttle bodies......yet

I actually used both of those links while I was doint it. There wasn't much on the plate or the shaft, and I cleaned both of them off before I put them back in. I even used dielectric grease all over the shaft. I just don't know what this new hissing noise is. I need to do another leak test to see if the seals were even leaking in the first place.

That's odd, yea maybe something else is leaking right around the same area. I'll try and check mine later tonight to see if i have the same sound.

What did you use for shaft seals, orings or the proper seals? Like the vfaq says, did you check the opening/closing action once you got the springs wound back on? Did you remember to properly tighten both nuts on the shaft? Did you mark the TPS in several spots to get it back on 100%? These are all just guesses, the best thing would be to do a boost leak test & find exactly where the leak is coming from. To make sure its not the shaft seal, move the throttle open & closed while doing the test. If the noise changes while doing this, its the shaft seals that are leaking.

I used the shaft seals that JNZ tuning sells. When I did the leak test before I moved the throttle open and closed and the noise did change. that is what led me to believe it was the shaft seals. The new noise is not during a leak test. It is during idle. Yes, I tightened both nuts on the end of the shaft, and the screws in the middle of the shaft. I also used loctite on all. Again with the TPS, i didn't mark it. When I put it back on I set it per RRE instructions for 2g TB on a 2g because I figured marking it wasn't as accurate.

Maybe what I'm really wondering is: Is it possible for the TB plate not to be seated and have air rushing past it even though it is bolted in.

Is the throttle body to intake manifold gasket on the right way? I put mine on backwards one time and had the same thing happen.

Well, I got 2 new gaskets when I got the seals, and to be honest with you I'm not even sure I put each one in the right place.

I put the one that is perfectly symmetrical (left in picture) on the TB to IC pipe side with the o-ring facing the IC pipe. With the other gasket I put the part that has the extra piece with the rubber ring towards the TB. I'm not sure how I clocked it. I'm not sure why it would matter, but if someone could explain that, then...yea, I'll believe it.

I would just like to say that checking that gasket solved the problem. I am not gonna lie, I didn't see that one coming, but thank you to RamenPride for suggesting it.
