or you could take off the valve cover and look at the rockers to make sure there is no pressure on the valves on #1 to make sure its the compression stroke. They ign. marks should be ligned up when it is...
BTW- what are you doing? Changing the t-belt or something?
 
sorry about the late post.... but take the spark plug out of the number one cyclinder and put a thin rod down in the cyclinder. then rotate the crank until the rod reaches the highest point of travel! then with the help of your marks on the the cam sprockets you can make sure that it's on the compresion stroke and not the exaust stroke!!!!!!! sounds kins retarded, but it works great!
