Ok here is the situation. I decided to keep my talon and install the final items necessary to get her running. Cleaning through the garage today I found the extra set of head studs I had ordered. Before I did the 6 bolt swap I was going to replace the headgasket and head studs on my 7 bolt. For shits and giggles I went and checked the part # of the unopened box of studs I had and DOH! )(*%)(@#$%*@#$

I put the 7 bolt head studs into the 6 bolt. What exactly is the difference between the 2 studs and am I going to have to pull the head off to replace the studs or would I be ok running w/ the 7 bolt studs in the 6 bolt block?

Greg

I don't see how you could have done that w/out knowing something was wrong. See, 6 bolts use a 12mm head stud whereas 7 bolts use a 11mm head stud, so I don't think, may be wrong, but I dont think the 11mm studs would thread in properly into the 12mm 6 bolt hole. See what Im saying? Is there ANY way you could have put the correct studs in and forgot?

absolutely no way I put the right ones in. I've got the studs sitting here in an opened box. Still packing tape sealing it closed. When I installed them, they threaded in just fine. The pitch on the stud is probably the same but I think I do recall noticing that they were slightly smaller than the opening.

Damnit, looks like I've got to pull that head off and redo the timing part again.. (@#)*)@(#$%

Yup. I would put the 6-bolt studs in the 6-bolt motors. Though the 7-bolt studs do fit the 6-bolt motors with extra clearance, 6-bolt studs will not fit 7-bolt motors.

The ARP head studs thread in w/ an allen wrench. Is there any way you could pull the valve cover, pull the nuts off the studs, then back the studs out w/ an allen w/out actually puling the head? And there's gotta be a diff. in them or else they wouldn't sell 2 dif. sets.

hrm.. thats a good idea, maybe I can try replacing them one at a time and retorqueing them down so I don't have to pull the timing belt section apart. That would be a pita as the engine is now installed in the car and all I had to do was bolt up the turbo and exhaust!

%)@#($* heh

I don't know if it will work though, the studs may be too long, and get cought up on the vavle spings, or something else upon removal. At least you can try.

What is the torque down spec on the 6 bolt ones in comparison with the 7 bolt arp head bolts.

Thanks reason why I ask is because some friends of mine helped me install my head yesterday and we torqued the 7 bolt ARP studs on my car to 77 lbs using the included grease.
But the box listed a 90 lbs torque pressure using 30w oil.
So should I bring it up to an even 80

Ok I'm a double moron. #1.. I had the right studs in there. I forgot that I had sent the set of 7 bolt ARP studs back to SBR to exchange for 6 bolt studs. Then I finally got the 6 bolt studs from the guy I bought the engine from who promised them. Of course it took 2 months to get them from him after I gave him the money LOL. Thank god I found out he was on probation. It's amazing what a threat of a call to a PO can make someone do.. heheh

So I put the right ones in the first time, and the extras was exactly that.

Whew.. thank god cuz :) From what I saw it wouldn't be too bad to replace the studs anyways even w/ the head still on but I'm glad I didn't have to.

and wh000p I bought another 95 tsi awd tonight... hehehehehe Maybe I will put those studs to use afterall.. LOL

Well thats good news. So you have an extra set of 6 bolt head studs? The 95 is a 7 bolt, so Ill take them off your hands for all the hard work I did for you......

This one will probably get a 6 bolt iswap like the first one hehe
