I run 22 psi daily on pump gas with an 11:1 A/F and 23 degrees of timing (3 counts of knock) so I don't see why 20 would be a problem. Per Dave Johnson at DejonTool, they've run 24-25 psi on race fuel with the stock head studs and mitsu gasket. The biggest issue to make sure that you have adequate fuel supply. If you do, then you shouldn't have any issues.

Hope that helps,

Andy

thank you.... andy.
now anyone else with a different opinion??

A buddy of mine made 314 hp and 342 ft/tq on the dyno on 18 pounds of boost on the same turbo that you have and on the way back home blew the headgasket. The car was tuned to 12:1 I believe. Stock studs and gasket.

I think it has a lot to due with tuning but it has a lot to due with luck in my opinion as well. If you have the time and money, I would at least put some ARP's in there and retorque, but if you don't just wait and see what happens. That's what I am going to do. I am running 19 pounds on a 14B and if the HG goes then it does and I replace it with a metal HG and ARP's, if not then the stock one stays.

I think a lot of this has to do with the fact that the A/F was so aggressive. Something more reasonable like 11.5:1, which is the way I'm leaning, probably wouldn't have done the HG in, but as KC mentioned, it somewhat depends. The situation could have been made much worse from inadequate fuel or heinously high timing. I know that when I re-calibrate for 11.5:1, that I'm actually going to drop the timing a few degrees to be safe about it.

I would have to add though, that if you have the chance to install ARP's, then go ahead and do so since it's cheap insurance. As far as the stock HG, it can certainly take a beating and handle the boost just fine. If you think about it, the Big 16G pretty much runs out of steam between 22-24 psi, so there's really not much of a need to go beyond that. Just make sure the A/F and timing are workable for pump gas and at least log it. Tuning on the edge is great, but KC's right, going beyond will cause some major headaches.

Hope that helps,

Andy

So what generally happens when the headgasket blows? Just pull the motor, clean stuff and replace the gasket/bolts/studs and that's it? Do you lose your engine as a result of the oil being mixed with the coolant?

90% of the time, you just need the head checked out by the machine shop and probably a resurface. Then clean, replace, and that's it. Sometimes more damage is done, especially if coolant temps get way up there above the boiling point.

i ran a 50 trim with 23lbs on a completely stock longblock with over 85k miles on the clock. my timing was 24 degree and i never had a problem. ran the car like this for over 20k miles without a single motor problem. my a/f was tuned to 11.6:1

Yes, I agree with what Andy says above. I too run 22psi daily on pump gas on a slightly rich tune. I have a stock head gasket and head bolts on a 7-bolt. I have not had any problems as of yet. :thumb:

If you have a good, safe tune, and you don't ride 22 psi all the way to work on the highway, then yes. you will be fine. Plus I think you kinda answered your own question there.... "i been running 20ish for awhile now" If you have been doing it for a while with no ill affects, then I see no need to make a change. :dsm:

Exactly what I was about to say, you need to make sure that you are always watching your coolant temps. especially when you are running it really hard and keeping the boost above 15 pounds. That is the one gauge that I am constantly watching because once you warp a head, it cost a lot of money to replace/fix it, and trust me it is extremely easy to warp an aluminum cylinder head. I have already been through that whole process, actually ended up snapping a cam because the journals closed up on the left hand side of the exhaust cam and snapped it right in the middle.

I think that you should be ok, but make sure that you are paying attention to what is going on in the motor or you could do some serious damage.

I run 24lbs on pump dailey. I dont boost very often during routine trips to work and school. But when I do, I am somewhere between 11.4-11.8 a/f ratio as soon as i get 1lb of boost, until the fun ends at 24. Keep in mind i dont get full boost in 1st or second gear....lag
COMPLETELY STOCK 7BOLT driven dailey. :shhh:

what the hell kinda turbo are you running??something must be wrong with your car if you can't build any boost in 1st or 2nd gear. :|

I don't believe that he isn't building any boost, I think that he just isn't hitting full boost. Must be running a really laggy turbo not to get full boost in 2nd though

seem like 20psi + is a good number... i guess ill keep my boost at 20psi..

Sorry, I do hit full boost (24lbs) in 2nd, but as soon as i get it(i hear the gate @full blast) I have to change gear. But , i never get full boost in 1st gear, i just get close. It helps at the track. My friend runs 27-29 dailey on a stock JDM 6 bolt, but currently 25.....TUNED. I turned my boost down to 21, when i saw only 10-13 degrees of timing @WOT. I think my timing issue is due to my current overheating situation.

BTW, I am running a T04B vtrim. I know what youre thinking...........WTF?

And also, 98spydert, please dont judge my dyno numbers. That was @ 17lbs of boost. I run 24 on occasion, usually 22, but never less than 20. I do admit that my lag is very fishy..............But, im working on it.
