Hello, I just built up my 7bolt 2g (95 TSI FWD Auto), swapped everything, and neglected to write down what goes where on the starter.

There is one small wire which actually activates the starter, that one is plugged in the right spot.

There are two large terminals on the starter and two large wires (going directly to + and - on the battery). I know the + goes to one of the starter terminals and I would ASSUME the negative wire goes to the other terminal. However, I think I read somewhere that the negative bolts between the tranny and the block. That would leave the 2nd terminal on the starter unused. Is this right?

To sum things up, does the negative cable even bolt to the starter? If not, which terminal is for the positive wire?

(i have the DSM cd, and I searched the forum, I don't think this information is listed anywhere...)

The + wire goes to the teminal on the starter that is farthest away from the case(top, next to the small signal wire) and the - wire goes to one of the tranny-block bolts. Do not try to hook the - to the starter solenoid or you will blow fuses and possibly have other problems.

Holy crap, thats what I did.... 2 wires, 2 terminals, i thought... "they MUST go there"

ok I will take off the - and ground it to the tranny and let you know how it goes. Damnit, why would they put 2 terminals if you only need to use one. Confusing I tells ya!

Alright, i managed to get the - off the solenoid. I grounded it to the block and my starter works!!!!!!

.........now if i could just get the car running :sneaky:

Nice job solving Sharkcus's problem. :thumb:

You get a rep point!

Reviving this thread to ask about the other two wires - one in the harness and one on the starter. I thought when I disconnected them, they each had a location but I cannot figure out which goes where.

I figured that the small wire from the harness goes to the tab at the top of the solenoid. Does the wire that goes from the positive terminal on the solenoid plug in somewhere or is this intended as a diagnostic input/output?

Funny thing I just fixed this same problem on my car and do I feel like a moron. The positive post which will be the one closest to the firewall when installed will have your positive wire from the battery attached. The other post doesn't have a wire to it... you just have a ground wire in between one of the mounting bolts and the bellhousing.

EDIT: If you're talking about the wire that physically comes out of the starter it goes to the ground post and is secured by a nut. It should have been that way when you got it.

Maybe this is the difference between the 2g and 1g. I have FOUR (4) wires - two power (one pos, one neg) and two smaller wires (one on the solenoid, one on the harness).

The main power wires are all setup correctly - One Positive to the terminal furthest from the block, One Negative to the mounting bolt on the bell housing. I have two small wires that look like sensor wires left over. They are the kind of connectors that attach to a wire 'tab'.

There is one tab on the top of the solenoid and two wire tab connectors. Is there another tab somewhere hidden or does only one of the connectors attach?

Confused?

The 1G starter looks like this and only has two connections. The starter "S" terminal (spade connector) from the starter relay and the "B" terminal (bolt) to the battery positive terminal. The ground is provided by the bolts into the bellhousing.

The magnetic switch is what most of us would call the starter solenoid. The "M" terminal is the output of the magnetic switch that connects the starter motor to the battery (via the B terminal). When you apply 12v to the "S" terminal it shorts the "B" and "M" contacts.

hum..I really do hate electrical I got a thick wire coming from the starter to the + battery post and I believe the - going to the neg battery post is this wrong?

BTW I havent ran the car yet, thats how I was planning on hooking it up...

on the 1g, what gauge wire should i run from the starter to the battery terminal and then also for the ground?
