Pressure relief valve. Yes, you must have one.
Let me try again. That may be a thermostat for the oil, and the pressure relief is the one to the right with the flat little cap.

Well, that should flush out the right answer soon enough. :confused:
 
(as per your picture) >The small one on the right is the pressure relief valve, and the large one on the left (the one your missing) is the oil cooler bypass valve.

actually, that gold thing that is referred to as a bypass valve is actually a thermostat. when the oil gets to a certain temp, it opens, and sends the oil to the heat exchanger.
 
its definatly not a thermostat. It opens if there is a pressure drop after the oil cooler. To keep the engine from starving oil. Ive never seen anything to hint to anything related to heat in the mechanics of one. Simply a valve covering a hole held by a spring.

Whatever you want to call it. It does regulate the oil passage thru the oil cooler utilizing temperature changes as the determining factor. :D
