Grrrrr, I've got a brand new rebuilt engine, I think my new cams are messing up the a/f ration just enough to fail the HC test at idle. My fuel trims are all out of whack with high, mid and low all around 139 all other numbers on the datalogger look normal

the idle limit on HC is 220, and the best I can get is 470. I passed all other tests.

ALL of the stock vacuum hoses have been put back in place, I've blocked off the EGR, the cat is back on the car. I built a pressure tester and fixed the vacuum/pressure leaks in my intake system!

I've been through the test three times now, and got it closer each time.

What can I try now??? So close, and yet so far

One of my buddies suggested dumping a bottle of rubbing alcohol in the gas tank?? Has anyone heard of trying this? Will it break anything?

Any other suggestions would be appreciated

Thanks,
Johnnytsi-

i heard of some stuff you pore into your fuel tank i forget the name of the stuff but onece you put that in the tank drive it to the emissions and it passes everytime if someone can remember it let this guy know =0) i dont have emissions here in fla its been years sisnce i had to do emissions when i was up north.

RXP is the stuff your talkin about. Pour some in your gas tank and try again. Also, make sure you get the car as hot as possible right before the test because the hotter the cat, the better it works. If you can, raise the idle rpm speed alot higher and it will cut down on the hc's too.

I am in Texas, and here in Plano where I am, they have recently boosted the tests up, making it harder to pass them. I am rebuilding my car, and have been worried that I might have some trouble, since car is being completely converted from NT to a turbo. What are some things I can do to insure a passing test?

:dsm: well i wouldnt recommend alcohol...but anyway..my car would never pass inspection in a million years..so i usually get someone to pass it for me...ask around for a mechanic who does that..you'll probably pay a little extra but its worth it..

the "guaranteed to pass" stuff works really well, you get a full tank of gas put the bottle in and then use up all the gas then fill your car up with new gas and go get it smoged. my car wasn't even close to passing and then after using the stuff it passed. good luck.

According to all the research I've done on this emissions thing, the EGR system only reduces NO emmisions and doesn't affect HC. HC is unburned fuel, (or oil) either due to an overly rich condition, or overly lean which causes a misfire and unburned fuel.

since my rebuild my fuel trims have been WAY out of whack, 139% on high, mid and low trims, I suspect that the new cam profile is the root cause of my problems. There is a noticable lope at idle. I have an S-AFC on order so I'll be able to tune it a little richer

Another thought I had was that until the rings seat, they are probably letting some oil past them into the combustion chambers, that could cause a high HC number.

I finally gave up and took the car to a state certified emissions shop and spent the required $150 in an attempt to get the emissions under limits, The car ran like cr@p afterwards and still didn't pass the idle HC test. However as I had spent the magic amount in an "attempt" to fix the problem I was granted a waiver. what a joke!!

The bozo's at the emissions shop had set my timing to 5 degrees ATDC, no wonder the car barely ran.

Now that I have my tabs, I've removed the cat, retimed the engine and am happily boostin again.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions.
